Post cards
This date night Rachel and Sam decided to stay in. Sam was still recovering from a hunting injury and didn't want to push anymore harm on himself. As Rachel was in the kitchen grabbing a drink for the two of them, Sam was picking out a movie to watch. On one of the lower shelves there was a shoe box tucked in between some box sets. It was painted blue with "Travel Log" written with a sharpie. His curiosity got the better of him and he peeked inside.
"Post cards?" Sam asked opening the shoebox.
Rachel came back in with two beers in hand. "Yeah, we used to travel when I was a kid and my mom always got one from the palaces we visited." She sat down on her sofa's armrest and popped the caps off. "She usually forgot about them a week later but I liked to keep them."
Sam shuffled through her collection. They were all a bit old and faded. "You guys really liked museums," Sam noted after the fifth one.
"My dad is a bit of a history buff; and if there was a war site nearby we had to go. I always preferred the science exhibits. They always stuff to touch, you know?"
Sam nodded remembering one or two field trips to such places and continued through her collection. There were some postcards from diners and hotels, and odd tourist traps, and all seemed to be the same time.
"Is this Disneyland?" Sam asked showing her one with a picture of castle.
"Disney World actually. You never went to Disney World?"
"No."
"What?!" she jumped nearly dropping the bottles. "No. Not acceptable. If we have kids, we are changing that."
"It's a bit early to be talking about kids." Sam chuckled.
"Well, we can't go by ourselves. That would be weird."
Sam laughed and kissed her. "I guess so." He gently placed the pile back into the box and tucked it back on the shelf where he found it. "You don't have any recent ones," he noted.
"I would love to add more to my collection, but I don't get many chances to travel. The glamorous life of a Sunday school teacher I suppose."
"Hmm," he nodded, and that was all he said about it. Sam grabbed a random movie and sat down beside her taking his beer. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and tangled his fingers in her auburn hair and she rested her head on his shoulder.
"What did you pick?"
"I have not idea."
A few weeks later, while Sam was back out hunting with his brother, Rachel received a postcard in the mail from Bedford, Iowa. It was an old vintage photo of the main street with a church at the end of the road. There was no name of who it was from and only one word was written on the back.
"Demon."
Rebecca could hardly contain her smile.
Soon after another arrived from Ohio with the Buckeye Stadium saying "Rouge angels." Another followed from a West Virginian dinner; "Poltergeist". The longer Sam was away, the more cards showed up in her mailbox, always with just a creature's name on the back. By the time he called saying he was on his way back, he was gone for half a month and her collection almost doubled.
She tackled him in the doorway with kisses. "I guess you got the cards," he laughed once he caught his breath. "There's still a few more on their way."
