BIRTHDAYS
Seven entered the mess hall and scanned the tables. With some disappointment, she noted that Commander Chakotay had not yet arrived. She was about to step back into the corridor when she spotted Naomi Wildman sitting by herself and starring out at the warp-streaked stars. In front of her was a large piece of what appeared to be double chocolate fudge cake with a small candle on it. Naomi then blew out the candle, picked it out and put it aside, and lifted a fork to dig in. Seven frowned and stepped closer to investigate.
"Naomi Wildman," Seven said with her arms crossed and looking down at the girl, "what are you eating?"
"My birthday cake," Naomi replied innocently.
"We celebrated your birthday three months ago," Seven corrected.
"That was my Earth birthday," Naomi replied. "Today is my birthday on Ktaris." She smiled smugly and added, "The year on Ktaris is about eighteen days longer than on Earth."
"I see," Seven replied with a frown.
Just then Commander Chakotay stepped up to the table. He appeared a little winded. "Sorry I'm late," he said, and then noticing the cake and candle added, "What are we celebrating?"
"My birthday," Naomi chimed in.
Chakotay looked surprised and glanced between Seven and Naomi. "I thought we just celebrated that."
"Today is Naomi's Ktarian birthday," Seven replied with just a trace of humor. "As you might know, the Ktarian year is eighteen days longer than the Earth year."
"I didn't know that."
"It gets better," Naomi replied excited. "Next week I'll have my Klingon birthday and my Bolian birthday. You know, Bolarus IX orbits a red dwarf and has a really short year, so I'll be thirteen Bolian years old."
"A teenager," Chakotay responded with a chuckle, and then leaned down with a conspiratorial look. "The Federation has over five hundred inhabited worlds. I bet we could celebrate your birthday most every day."
Seven shot Chakotay an irritated expression and then turned her attention back to Naomi. "I believe Commander Chakotay's suggestion would be an excellent mathematical problem for you to solve. As a school assignment, I would like for you to calculate your next birthday for all the Federation planets and colony worlds in our database and present your findings to Commander Chakotay and myself." She then reached down and picked up the plate with the double chocolate fudge cake. "I don't believe, however, your mother would appreciate each celebration to be accompanied by the consumption of a confection."
