Summary: Maria reads a letter she wrote to herself about her future lover...
"Maria De Luca" the envelope read. Maria stared at it for a long time before she turned it over and tore it open. Inside was a folded piece of stationary with little kittens running up the sideline.
"When I fall in Love," the title read. Suddenly she remembered writing the letter. She must have been around 13 or 14 when she believed love was perfect and happened just like it was in the movies, before she fell in love with Michael Guerin.
--It will be with a handsome prince for some exotic country
Read the first bullet. 'Wow I was idealistic,' she mumbled. But then Michael wasn't too far from that. He was handsome, model material in her mind, if he could keep the hair under control. And he was a prince or close to it. So if an exotic country could be a far off planet she hadn't gone wrong yet.
--He will sweep me off my feet
If shampoo didn't sweep a woman off her feet what could? Sure, he messed up there, but it wasn't presents that had won her over, if it had been she'd still be firmly planted on the ground. But it was his concern for the people he cared for that she saw that first day at the Crashdown when Max healed Liz. Or the times he had put himself at risk for her or Max or Isabel.
--He will never look at another the way he looks at me
'Well, I don't think he ever gave Courtney that look of utter confusion,' she thought. And as she thought about it she realized how stupid her jealousy was. Problems didn't automatically mean he ran. Michael wasn't like that, he loved deeply, felt deeply. It was the only way he knew how. And he had showed her himself, she knew him, not everything about him, but she knew. And everything he did was for her. That she was positive of.
--It will be forever
And that was the biggest truth of them all. So maybe her childhood self had been a little dreamy and imaginative, but the imagination can take you anywhere. There was no one else for her, no one could love her as much and she knew forever wasn't long enough to love him just as much as she did.
Happy Birthday-
I closed. What a great surprise for her birthday, to know she had found the love of her life, and know he was just what she'd always hoped for. No one could ask for more.
"Maria," she heard.
"Uh-huh," she answered turning to see Michael in the doorway. And judging by the look of mischief in his eyes, she knew she could ask for too much moreā¦and receive every inch of it.
"What you doing?" Michael said his arms wrapping around her waist. She felt him peering over her shoulder and quickly shoved the letter back in the envelope.
"Nothing," she said pulling it away from his grasp. "Just a present."
"From who?"
"My are we inquisitive today," she answered reaching up to kiss him on the nose before untangling herself from his arms and shoving the letter back into her sock drawer.
"No fair," he pouted.
"Nothing's ever fair now, is it?" Maria teased.
"No it isn't," Michael said walking away.
Maria caught him by the arm, "It's the best birthday present ever. That's what it is."
Michael pulled her in close and kissed her lips. She moved in and held her mouth to his, asking for more, but he pulled away. "Best birthday present ever," he mumbled. "Best birthday present ever, my ass. I'll give you best birthday present ever."
Michael kissed her again and then walked towards the bedroom. Maria watched him mount the bed and smiled to herself. Who was she kidding? Knowing he was hers was one thing, but nothing could beat having him.
"When I fall in love it will be with Michael," she sang softly to herself. That should have been number one.
