By the Sea
He stood there, looking at the sea and holding a jar of what seemed like ashes. It had been months since that night and Toby found himself reliving it every time he slept. The wind pushed back the fringe of his hair and he smiled, remembering a hand that had done the same once upon a time. The boy now lived with Anthony and Johanna and they treated him right, but he still missed Mrs.Lovett and Mr.Todd.
Toby was glad that Mrs.Lovett's shop remained untouched and empty, allowing him to buy the place when he was old enough. He had it planned out; he would buy the shop, fix it and clean it up, and re-open it. He would keep the name and make the meat pies himself; of course out of real meat, not human. He evened planned to open Mr.Todd's barber shop again, shaving men's faces whenever he had the shop downstairs closed for an hour, at most.
"Toby! It's getting late," came Johanna's voice.
"Okay, be right there!" he called over his shoulder.
He looked back at the jar he held and smiled.
"Told you I would take you to the sea one day," he whispered, looking back at the sea. "It's beautiful, ain't it? I hope it's wot you dreamed it would be like. I miss you and Mr.T as well. I love you, mum."
Toby placed a kiss to the jar before taking off the lid and pouring Mrs.Lovett's ashes (along with meat pies probably) into the sea. Grinning, the boy ran back to Anthony and Johanna.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"What do you plan to do with those?" Anthony asked, looking at Toby as he looked at the silver razors that had once belonged to that murderer Sweeney Todd. "Toby?"
"I'm gonna keep 'em," he replied, putting the polished box back on the shelf. The child cherished that box and its contents, cleaning them and polishing them every day. "You wanna know wot I'm gonna do one day, Anthony?"
"What?"
"I'm gonna live by the sea," Toby said as he crawled into bed. "Mrs.Lovett wanted to live there with me and Mr.T. We were a proper family, Anthony…We weren't perfect, but we were a family."
"That's all that matters," the older man smiled as he saw the boy's eyes glow with fondness for his 'family'. "Why did you keep the razors, Toby?"
"Anyone else would've sold 'em, but not me. Mr.T would've wanted me to keep 'em, I know it." The boy yawned. "They weren't bad people,"
Anthony smiled as he began to leave the room; Toby's eyes drooping as he slowly lost his battle with sleep. He didn't want anymore nightmares.
"That's where I'll live," he muttered tiredly as he snuggled into the pillow. "Right by the sea."
Thinking of the future, Toby fell fast asleep. And for the first time since that night his dreams weren't filled with Mrs.Lovett's dying screams, Mr.Todd's blood, or the images of him slitting the man's throat. Instead, he was building a sandcastle by the sea. Toby's head looked up to see Mrs.Lovett and Mr.Todd smiling at him. He ran over to them and sat in between his 'parents', watching the sunset in the horizon.
And that's how they would remain in his mind. A family. A happy, proper family. Forever.
By the sea.
