Clutching the small brown bear in her arms, Elizabeth let the tears fall from her eyes and coat her cheeks in fat hot droplets. Their only son was gone and for what? -Some rival of Sonny's taking revenge on her family. It wasn't fair; it wasn't supposed to be this way.
Standing, Elizabeth walked away from her son's crib, packed the bear into her suitcase and picked it up from the ground.
Jason came into the room puzzled by her bags. "Where are you going?" His eyes were red, swollen from tears and they matched Elizabeth's perfectly.
"There's nothing left between us now. We both know that. Don't make this any harder than it has to be." She said, quietly forcing the words out, because even as she said them, she knew they weren't true.
"Elizabeth I'm sorry." Jason said sadly, as he approached his grief-stricken wife. Elizabeth turned to him as if she couldn't see him, or didn't recognize him and maybe she didn't. Her fists went out connecting with his massive chest before she even realized he was standing there.
"You're sorry? Sorry won't bring him back! You were supposed to protect us! You were supposed to protect him!" The lines on her face were harsh as she sank to the ground, clutching his tee shirt in her small hands.
"I never meant . . . " he trailed off, and his voice broke on a silent cry.
"You and Sonny never mean the things you do." She picked herself up and walked to the front door, kept going until she was at the cab and then hopped in. She never
looked back, even though she knew Jason would be standing there and even though it was killing her. Placing her hand on her belly, she smiled through her tears. This
time she was going to make sure her child was safe and the only way to do that was to walk away from the man she loved more than anything.
