Envy ( Invidia )
Dante defined this as "a desire to deprive other men of theirs." Envy can be directly related to the Ten Commandments, specifically "Neither shall you desire... anything that belongs to your neighbor". In Dante's Purgatory, the punishment for the envious is to have their eyes sewn shut with wire because they have gained sinful pleasure from seeing others brought low. Aquinas described envy as "sorrow for another's good".
EVERGREEN
There was no doubt that Evergreen did jealousy well. After all, she had once gotten into a huge fight just because she was angry that another woman had the title of Titania, Queen of the Faeries. No, Evergreen did not like the idea of not being the best. She was, after all the only female in Fairy Tail's strongest team. In her mind, that made her the only one worthy of the title.
But when they fought, Erza Scarlet was the victor, not Evergreen. It had been hard for the brunette to swallow, though the losses of her fellow Raijinshuu members made it easier. And then there was the excommunication of her leader, the man she was willing to follow to the end. The one who had seen the power she held in her gaze, and had given her a group to work with. Behind the shine of her glasses, Evergreen watched the other members of her guild congratulate each other on winning, a cold fury shining in her eyes.
Time passed, and the Raijinshuu tried to blend in with the rest of the mages, but still, envy remained in her heart. She changed her hair, changed her clothes, but still she was left alone more often than not. Even the little blonde stellar spirit mage was praised more often than she was, and given more dangerous missions along with Natsu and company.
It made her sick.
When time came for the S-class mages, Evergreen sat waiting to hear her name for once, to be recognized for the power she held. But, of course, she was passed over once more, first when combatants were selected, then when her teammate was choosing his partner. Freed choosing their other teammate was the twist of the knife in her chest, so, being the prideful woman she was, she scared Elfman into letting her get into the trials. Truthfully, she was working with him to get back at Freed and Bixlow, and partially to prove her worth to the Master.
And then she learned that Freed and Bixlow lost to Lucy and Cana, while she and Elfman defeated Mirajane of all people. Evergreen's ego rose at that, and she started making plans to rub it in the green-haired male's face as soon as she could.
But then she failed at helping Elfman defeat that member of Grimore Heart. And her inflated ego sank just as quickly. Watching her nakama beat him hurt as well, just rubbing in the fact that she couldn't.
Green with envy, people said. Well, that was her.
It was Evergreen's greatest sin.
Ok, I'm putting the author's note at the end for this series. Not too happy with the ending, but just felt I've been staring at it long enough so yeah.
Congrats, you've gotten through the first part of a seven-shot series I'm planning : Seven Deadly Sins. Each chapter will focus on a character and a sin. As you can tell, Evergreen is Envy. I have most of the others planned out already, and hope you enjoy it!
Please review, it helps me write better. Really.
