Stupid Muggles
D: Never has been mine. Isn't mine right now. Never will be mine.
A/N: This is for the Awkward DracoAstoria Challenge by DreaG1996. They had to meet in the middle of a busy instersection, on the street. My emotion was friendship. Enjoy! R&R and all that.
Astoria was not having a good day. She had spilled tea all over her jumper at work, her kneazle had bit her finger, it rained all over her neatly-pinned hair, and she missed was late for work. Now, she was standing at the corner of the street, waiting for the little stoplight to tell her she could walk.
She look around the busy intersection and longed for the quiet of her flat. She wanted to escape the bright and flashing lights, the screaming children, and the low hum of general chatter. She pulled her damp jacket around her, and watched the road.
"I'm not dealing with this," she muttered angrily, watching the cars pass with no hint of slowing. She waited for any small break in the blurry line of cars, and upon seeing one she raced onto the road, praying to whoever would listen. Several drivers honked at her or gave her an unfriendly gesture.
"Stupid muggles," she said aloud as she reached the middle of the street.
"I'll second that," a voice laughed behind her. Astoria jumped, her head popping up and hitting something hard.
"Oh OW! Dobby's sock! Ow!" she hissed, rubbing her head.
"Sweet Mother of Merlin! Oh bloody- ow!" the stranger yelped.
Astoria giggled quietly at his outburst before looking up at her victim. Her grin melted away as she recognized his eyes. Grey eyes. Eyes that she'd seen on several wanted posters in her third year. Eyes that Daphne had gushed over. Black eyes. He was a Black. Several drivers were screaming now.
"W-who are you?" she asked, her eyes not leaving his. She had a feeling she knew the answer.
"Draco Malfoy." he whispered, knowing he had lost any chance of friendship with this strange girl. Her eyes shot down to the street then up to him.
"You're far too civil to be a Malfoy. Nope. I think you're a... hmm... Boot?" she asked, naming off a family friend. Malfoy gave her a hesitant grin.
"No, I'm more of a sneakers guy myself." he joked, warming up to the woman.
"Prat. You know, my sister always described you as cold and off-handed." she stated, wondering what could have changed her sister's childhood crush into the man before her.
"That was a long time ago, when I didn't know how much it hurt to be so cruel" he said, his downcast. Astoria snorted.
"That seems awful mushy for an ex-Death Eater. Maybe you should have tried something else. Like... you were under the Imperius Curse all of your school life." she smiled.
"Or maybe it was all a ploy to make people fear me." he winked. Astoria laughed a full laugh that made her sound far to vulnerable for a girl who was ticking off traffic in the middle of the street.
"Nice one, Malfoy. You know, I think this is a start to a beautiful friendship." she said, running across the street, her bad mood not quite so visible.
"Oi! What's your name?" Draco called after her. Astoria turned back, grin lighting her face.
"Astoria." she yelled back. Draco did something then, that was border-line crazy.
"Astoria. Meet me at Florean Fortescue's tomorrow, this time?" he yelled. Astoria smiled, nodded, and rounded the corner across the street, leaving Draco to face the wrath of a score of angry drivers.
