Tap, tap, tap…tap, tap, tap. The pencil hit the desk again and again as Kelsey day dreamed in the middle of chemistry class. Her thoughts wandered everywhere, to her school work, to the new song she was composing, to Ryan…

She shook her head and jotted down a note. Ryan wasn't interested. She glanced over at him, admiring his bright smile and cute eyes. He spotted her and gave her a little wave. She sighed. It was a 'hey, friend' wave, not a 'hey, you're cute and I like you' wave. She checked the clock, and rolled her eyes when she realized only thirty short minutes of class were through. She pulled out a sheet of paper with her latest composition:

You're cute, you're sweet,

You light up my day.

We could get together,

But we'd never stay.

We're nothing alike,

We're worlds apart.

But I still can't ignore

My yearning heart.

I still can't believe,

It's you I'm in love with…

She took a look over it, planning to continue. With a sigh, she scratched out the last line and replaced it with: 'It's you I like.'

She tucked it away for another time and continued to work on her paper. Before her pencil touched the paper, someone behind her spoke. "You lovesick puppy."

Kelsey turned to see Sharpay, checking her lips in a tiny compact mirror. "Excuse me?"

"Oh please, Kelsey. We both know what's going on. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone."

"I…Yeah. I just wished he liked me back."

"Kelsey, if it's meant to be, he'll realize it soon enough. If it isn't, you'll soon get over it."

"But what if I never get over it?"

Sharpay grinned. "You keep daydreaming."

Kelsey smiled and went back to her work. Maybe Ryan would like her. Maybe not. Until then, daydreaming wasn't such a bad substitute.
