If Pain Means Happiness
It's kind of crazy how you tell me that you would never leave me and then turn and walk away. Carly-centric, Carson one shot
She wrapped the leather coat tighter around herself, blocking out the winter's chill. It was her favorite coat—a gift from him. It seemed that everything he gave her was her favorite item in the world and then he would scream at her and she'd throw his presents in the trashcan or the fireplace, whichever was closest.
The coat was always safe form her clutches for after the anger went away, she'd put it on, inhale its familiar scent and fall asleep.
Carly took a seat on the wooden bench covered with frost. She and Sonny had fought yet again and she stormed out after shattering an antique vase against the wall. He had accused her of betraying him and she had denied it—as usual. However this time different, Sonny had told her he reached his breaking point with her and could no longer be happy in the marriage.
"I'll have the divorce papers drawn up." He announced before heading up to the bedroom.
Carly's first instinct was to call Jason, her knight in shining armor, but she hung up the phone right before he answered. Jason could not keep saving her every time Sonny had yelled at her. So Carly opted for a walk to calm herself down. She had clamed down and now wiped at her tears as she stared at the water shimmering along the docks.
She and Sonny argued a lot—more so than any normal couple, but, Carly noted, they would always find a way to work through their problems. But every yell and shout would put a tiny rip in their marriage and she had to wonder when they would just be hanging on by a thread, and when that thread would snap. Was this fight the last one they would ever have? Sonny had seemed serious in announcing that he wanted to divorce her.
Carly felt the rage inside of her once again as she stood up and clawed at her coat. The wind stung her skin as she threw the coat on the pavement, kicking it for good measure. She would no longer cry herself to sleep in that, now seemingly hideous, coat because of him. He did not deserve her tears and if he wanted a divorce then he sure as hell would get one.
Carly's cell phone rang out in the silence of the night and she answered it. "Hello?"
"Carly…" Sonny's voice was soft and gently and Carly felt the hot tears burn her cheeks once again.
"Carly, I'm sorry. I'm worried. Just come home and we will talk about everything. I love you so much."
Carly bit her tongue she wouldn't be weak….she wouldn't be weak…she wouldn't—"I love you too." Her voice broke as she listened to him list all of the ways she made him happy. She let out an inaudible sob. Carly wasn't sure why she was so breakable when it came to Sonny. Maybe she was addicted to him, or obsessed, but she was sure that she could not survive without Sonny in her life. "I'll be home soon, Sonny."
She clicked off her cell phone. She sighed and dried her salty tears. Carly knew what would happen when she got home. Sonny would kiss her and then look at the time and yell at her for being out so late.
Carly knelt down to pick up her battered coat. She would need it tonight.
