Kal'el was pushed to the ground by the force of his master's palm. A molten red handprint glowed on his shoulder. The rays from the sun slowly healed his wound, having the same properties on his alien body that the moon had on waterbenders of Earth. But the pain and fear did not subside.

J'on knelt by his fire-bending prodigy. "I fear flame, too, Kal'el. Of the elements, it is the most destructive. That is why those of us who carry it must respect it." He put his hand on Kal'el's shoulder and the pain soothed a little more. "I wish I did not have to teach you. With all your power, it is a frightening prospect what you might do the first time you make the flame. But you must learn if you are to stop Lord Darkseid. Fire is a necessary force in a duel with the Dark Avatar. You must have something with which to counter his Omega Technique."

Kal'el knew why he was learning. But he couldn't find a way to make his hands flame up.

J'on stood up again. "You were born with the art of Earthbending, and the spirit of Airbending. Which has made it so very hard for you to learn the rest of these disciplines. You are stalwart in your inmovability of mind and body. But fire requires motion. So please, make an effort to move."

Kal'el stood ready, fists out. J'on shook his head and leaped forward with his palm outstretched.

"Move, Kal'el!" He shouted.

Kal'el obediently sped away from his master, through the rows of corn. But J'on had also learned the same running technique from Master Allen. He caught up to him all too soon and slammed him into the soil, making a long crater.

"Move, not run." and his master punched down. Kal'el caught his fist. He could immediately feel the heat building.

Fight back, Clark. You must learn if you want to protect people. Darkseid won't even give you the advantage of a fist fight.

If I may, Kal'el. Said his telepathic opponent. If you feel you cannot face him as a man, act as an alien. It has always served me well.

Kal thought about the technique his master demonstrated. Because of his fear of open flame, J'on J'ohnz used his fire-bending to heat his palm and fist to extreme tempatures. Combined with his shifting movement, it could be as effective as a long range strategy. Darkseid has another alien. He chose to shoot amplified fire from his eyes so he need not stoop to fisticuffs.

Kal'el's issue wasn't that he didn't know where to put his flames, it was that he didn't know how to make them. Even with all the training sessions, meditation, and breathing exercises, he could not produce fire in his palm. He felt as though his body was too hardened to release the flame. Inpenetrability went both ways, it would seem.

The stone-like features of Darkseid came to his mind. And he realized.

J'on was beginning to sear his hand as the sat locked in combat. Focusing his chi to his eyes, steam rose from them, and then heatwaves. Before anything more could happened, J'on broke their embrace and moved hastily away from Kal'el.

Kal smiled, wide-eyed.

"Darkseid didn't choose the Omega Technique. It's the only thing he can do with fire. And I'm the same way."

He laughed with excitement.

"I have heat-vision!"
