Becoming Stronger

A/N Hey this is my first Avatar fic involving my fave Earthbender Toph. In anime there aren't a lot of visually impaired/blind person in anime besides Toph in Avatar for a kid like me who is visually impaired to relate to. In this Toph befriends a girl who is visually impaired and not very strong in confidence or inner strength but being with the Blind Bandit helps her become strong but there's something inside her which makes her different besides being visually impaired. I hope people like this.

Toph sighed as she returned to the Earth Kingdom. It had been a few months after Aang had stopped Firelord Ozai from using Sozin's comet to take over. She was nervous about seeing her parents again. She hoped they weren't too mad at her for leaving but hoped that the letter she had Katara write for her had helped them understand.

She walked through the streets of Ba Sing Se and saw some kids picking on a kid. It was a girl with long brown hair, slender and very quiet but Toph gasped in awe as she realised why they were teasing the girl.

According to her parents, Toph was the only kid born blind in the main city of the Earth Kingdom but the thirteen year old was proven wrong.

"Hey leave her alone!" Toph yelled using her earthbending skills to scare the kids away but helped the girl up.

"T-Thanks.

I am Naruna. I was born different from the others and an orphan.

My mother died after having me and as I was five years old, my father grew very ill and died when I was ten.

Nobody cares about me and thinks I'm a freak because I'm half blind and need a cane to see.

Some people are nice to me and some aren't.

I've been living on the streets since my parents left me." she explained as Toph saw the girl's symbol cane in her left hand. Anger burned in her hearing how others treated her like she didn't belong.

"That was the way I felt too until I met Aang and the others.

They believed in me and didn't care if I couldn't see or not, to them I was powerful and a strong person.

Maybe it's the same with Naruna." Toph thought as she looked into Naruna's eyes.

She knew what she had to do.

Naruna sighed as she was in an orphanange for most of her life and wanted a family and somebody who would care about her for who she was and not because she was visually impaired. On adoption days she tried her hardest to get people to like her and adopt her but refused once the officials of the orphanage told them she was visually impaired and it hurt Naruna seeing all her friends adopted and in loving families except for her and it hurt her.

She couldn't see in the dark and had lost her night vision and couldn't see sides.

That was why she had a symbol cane but it made people aware and stay away from her but lying in bed, she couldn't forget about that girl who'd helped her in the street but gasped realising it was the Blind Bandit.

"Why would she help me?

I'm a nobody, a loser.

Nobody wants to adopt somebody like me so I can forget about leaving here." she thought as tears ran down her face. She had her own room because the other kids didn't want to room with her.

She wished that somebody would care about her enough to be her friend and not afraid of her as she drifted off to sleep......
