Darkness is my Friend

Summary: How does Albert feel watching his father and sister head straight into danger to save Mary? This is all from his perspective.

I watched Pa and Laura leave the house and head back out into the storm. I was frightened. For them and for Mary, but there was nothing I could do. I had to watch Carrie and Grace, and a boy my size is not match for a gun. I just hope Pa is. I noticed he didn't take his rifle, and I'm worried. Pa's been known to act crazy in certain situations. The last thing he said stuck in my mind. They needed a doctor. Was Pa going to pretend to be Doc Baker? I drank the coffee that Pa had said I could have and poured myself another cup. I sat at the table and just waited. I don't think I slept at all.

"Albert, where's Pa?" I looked to see Carrie up and realized that it was morning and Pa hadn't come back. What if something terrible had happened to him?

"He just had to step out for a moment" I replied. "Do you want breakfast?"

"I think I'll wait for Pa" Carrie said quietly. I rolled my eyes, but I had to admit, my cooking was not the best. Once Grace was awake, I couldn't stand it anymore.

"Come on" I said.

"Where are we going?" Carrie asked.

"To the Blind School" I replied. "That's where Pa went. I thought it'd be nice to walk there" Carrie got dressed and helped Grace then we began the walk.

As we neared the blind school, my heart began racing. What was I going to find? Was Pa alright? Was I leading my sisters into danger?

I rapped on the door three times before it swung open.

"Laura" I whispered. I let go of Grace's hand and threw my arms around her. "Oh Laura, you're okay!" Laura nodded.

"The three guys are tied up" She said. "We're waiting for the police from Sleepy Eye" I breathed a sigh of relief.

"I was so worried when Pa didn't come home last night. Is Mary alright?" I asked.

"I'm fine Albert" I heard Mary's voice say.

"Come in" Laura said. Carrie, Grace and I entered and I saw Pa, with a bandage on his face.

"Pa!" I ran to him and threw my arms around him.

"What's going on?" Carrie asked. Mary made her way to Carrie and brushed her hair with one hand.

"Never mind Carrie" She said softly. "Everything's okay now" I was so relieved.

"Albert, why don't you take the girls to the restaurant for breakfast" Pa suggested.

"Okay Pa" I replied. I led Carrie and Grace out of the Blind School, content with knowing that my family was safe.
