Disclamer: I don't own Hoot, simple as that.
Beatrice wished she could be brave like Mullet Fingers. Leave home, run into the wild, take a stand at her dad. She's amazed that Mullet Fingers could be so brave as to defy, and simply disappear from their eyes. Late at night she dreams that the next time her dad comes in drunk, she spits in his unfocused eye, and then she walks out slamming the door. She'll stomp away to find Mullet Fingers and never look back. But she knows she couldn't ever do that. Her fear of being alone and of the unknown will keep her rooted to this dilapidated old house and will continue until she can be brave like Mullet Fingers. When that happens, nothing will keep her from dashing off into the unknown.
Mullet Fingers wished he could be brave like Beatrice. Stand up to his mother instead of running away from her. The fact that Beatrice has been able to stand up to her amazes him. He dreams, sometimes, in the heat of summer afternoons when it's really too hot to do anything but pant and think. He dreams of coming home, showing up his mother, beating her at her own game, the game of normalcy. Become smart and successful, then when she sees the mistake she made and comes crawling back, he can spit in her eye and turn his noes up at her. But he knows he couldn't ever do that. The fear of her claws, reaching around his neck and sucking all that makes Mullet Fingers Mullet Finger out, until he become her drone, Napoleon. That fear will keep him rooted to his boat until he can be brave like Beatrice. When that happens, nothing will stop him from rising to the top, proving to his mother that he, as his true self, has worth.
