This is a fanfic I wrote for my GCSE English Coursework. It is short, and has no background whatsoever. It is the first fic I wrote, but since then, I have started work on my other story (http://fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=635022).

The Legend of Zelda

The Globe of Power

Chapter 1 - Searching

Like a stone he dropped down the hole, landing catlike on all fours, then swiftly springing up, eyeing the cave for trouble. The cave he had fallen into was dark, murky and gloomy. The walls were covered in fungi, and underneath his boots, he could hear mud squelching, with the trickle of water from the ceiling. Link went back to the hole, the light streaming in a stark contrast to the inky black of the cave. The bright golden light illuminated his green clothes, his hood casting shadow on his pale face and short, blonde hair. He was young, only about 20, but one look at his face would tell you he was a dangerous fighter. His sword, slung behind his back with his intricate Hylian shield, was the legendary Master Sword, and there was none that could wield it as well as him. His bright blue eyes piercing the darkness, Link pulled the Master Sword out of its sheath and started moving, searching for the Globe of Power that he knew was somewhere near.

As his eyes got accustomed to the darkness, he made out a small passageway leading away from the cave. He stealthily walked towards it, scanning the area around it for a trap. As he got closer, Link realised the passageway was not made of damp, water eroded rock, but clean stone slabs. Someone had created the caves and was almost certainly still using them. He looked down the passage, and was suddenly overcome by a feeling of complete insignificance. The passage went on further than the mind could comprehend: straight, unending, eternal. What was the point of going on? He couldn't travel that far in a lifetime. It was hopeless. These feelings swelled up inside him until he could take no more.

'No!' he screamed, his voice ricocheting off the walls of the cave. His scream bounced through his skull, bringing him out of it with a jolt. He was the Hero of Time, and would not be stopped by these illusions. He strode into the passage, determined and brave. The walls started to glow and the passage ahead disappeared, leaving only a blank wall.

'So, he is defiant,' whispered a voice from behind him. It was a cold, reedy voice, chilling to the bone. Link turned, his sword ready, looking for the voice that spoke.

'Who are you? Where are you?' he asked, his voice hard and unwavering.

'You will not find me,' spoke the voice, from all around. 'I am the master of this place, and you can never hope to defeat me.'

'I'm not scared of you!' replied Link.

'I can see that,' said the voice, as eerie as ever. 'You are young, so I will give you a chance. If you can survive the terrors ahead, you may stand a chance of getting the Globe of Power.' Link stood unmoving.

'I do not need your help!' he yelled, but there was no answer. Some buried instinct told him unnatural magic was happening behind him, and he turned, ready to fight anything that might appear. The wall ahead of him seemed to throb with energy, clearly showing the shield that was now in his hand. Its contours were exaggerated, proudly displaying the eagle holding the Triforce. Then the wall disappeared and in its place, a whirling purple vortex appeared, its texture like water. Link took a breath, then stepped through.
