Spoilers: Through Episode 3.
John was changing.
Something inside of him had changed.
He'd always known he was no hero. His future self seemed a world apart from the person he knew himself to be. It had always angered him, knowing there was no way he could live up to the expectations of everyone around him. He had always felt they were expecting too much from him, that he wasn't that person. He was no leader.
But now something was different.
It had happened unexpectedly. In the blink of an eye, some part of him had shifted. It felt like a wall had crumbled, revealing to him a glimmer of the man everyone said he was going to become. He could feel the possibility of greatness still burning inside him- a hard kernel of potential that could either flourish or wither away.
He knew the choice was his own.
He'd never dreamt he would feel this way, but seeing that poor girl throw herself from the roof of their school had affected him deeply. He knew he could've helped her, if only he'd had the chance. He had no idea what made him so certain of that, but the truth of it rang in his heart. He could've done something.
But he knew why Cameron had stopped him. The ugly truth was, they couldn't afford to draw any kind of attention to themselves. He knew that. It just… didn't sit well with him. How was he supposed to realize his true potential if he had to keep it shut away in the dark?
The future would tell, he supposed. If it was really meant to happen, it he really was that man, it would happen eventually. He would have to keep his new hope for that alive somehow until the time was right.
Until that time, he would have to try to close the door on that newly awakened part of himself and forget it existed- as much as possible.
His mother thought there was nothing he could've done. Well, she was wrong.
Now just wasn't the time to prove it. But he wouldn't stay helpless forever.
