Great Expectations – My Chapter 2
Next morn, the burning orange light of the morning sun filtered through the battered rags being used, at that time, as a replacement for curtains, slowly awakened me from my deep slumber.
Soon out of my bed and down the stairs, I recalled my mission from the night before. The eerie silence that followed, petrifying me more than I already was. I froze on the spot.
"No, I can't give up now." I whispered. So low I thought I only heard it in my own head. "I just can't."
Drum. Drum. Drum. "Just my heart." They got louder and it was only then I realised they were footsteps. Bang. Bang. Bang. This time my heart. I ran.
"PIP!" Mrs Joe screamed in anger, her short, auburn hair falling in locks around her beetroot coloured face. In amusement, I had to stifle a giggle as it was quite a hilarious sight, but it soon faded as I saw the fire and anger in her eyes. I slammed the door and sprinted into the distance.
I ran. And ran. And ran. Every now and then glancing behind me, although it took no time at all for Mrs Joe to disappear from sight. Pushing harder I stumbled, fell, grazed my knees. It all happened so fast that I was dazed and confused as I stood, but I knew I had to keep running… Owls hooting in the treetops, rats scrabbling for purchase on the muddy earth.
