The Choice

Chapter 1

No child would ever want their parents to argue or fight. And no parents would ever let their child know what is about to come.

It was late evening when Anna and Yoh left their little boy alone with Ryu in the large Funbari inn. About to meet Yoh's colleague, they said.

Hana received with a smile the usual kiss in his cheek and paternal ruffling of his hair before waving goodbye at Yoh's speeding Ferrari.

"C'mon kiddo. Ya better off to bed, now. They'll be coming home late from their 'bizz-naizz' "Ryu chortled and snorted, "It'll include a lot of sake. I bet. Those luckies …" he mumbled something about getting himself a few can of coke as he switched off the lights.

--

Hana's eyes snapped open when the sound of slammed doors and shouts filled the formerly calm, peaceful night. His heart thudded loudly, then stopped for a split second once he realized that the high-pitched voice was his mother's. And that the lower but still audible, was his father's.

There was even Ryu's, saying something very quickly before he (it must be him) dashed loudly past Hana's room towards the front door.

The deafening clang of metal against the concrete wall made Hana sat straight on his futon. There was a pause, and in the ringing, disturbed silence that sneaked in, Hana gulped.

Slowly, he untangled himself from the blanket, paused, and crawled silently towards the tatami wall that separate his room and his parents

Calm as ever. Yoh said something that has the word "calm" in it. It gave the exact opposite effect; Anna shrieked and started shouting again.

There were brief pauses between her words; Hana dreadfully figured that she was throwing objects at his father.

He strained and listened. Catching few anger-drenched phrases, stomps, and the dull thuds of clean, firm catches.

Moments later, Anna's sentences came out quick and fluent, as though she had finally ran out of things to throw. Hana barely caught or understand any of them. Too few things have registered.

The boy pressed his ears against the wall when the second lull dropped.

Again, Yoh started to say something, but the Itako cut his words, shouting in a few deep takes of breath, "Who the fuck is that bloody bitch, Yoh?"
