It all started when Gru was in first grade.
The teacher had just announced that it was recess. A time for the children to stretch their legs and play outside to burn off some of their energy.
'Today is the day.' Thought Gru as he picked a pretty purple flower he had seen when his mother had dropped him off in the morning. It was perfect for what he had in mind.
For you see today was the day Gru decided he was going to ask his long time crush, Lisa Pattinson, out on a date.
He had been very nervous about how she would react to his request as she was the most popular of the girls in his class and she always had her friend with her. She even followed Lisa into the bathroom! So his original idea of getting Lisa one to ask her failed.
Gru wasn't sure he had the courage to ask her in front of anyone else. 'What if she rejects me?' Thought a worried Gru. He wasn't the most popular amongst his peers.
In fact they made it their life's goal to make him miserable. One of the ways they did this was that whenever he touched someone they would taunt that he had treated him as if he was some type of virus. That if they touched him they would get sick.
Gru couldn't help but think maybe Lisa was different though. Last week she said hi to him in the hallway. So gathering every ounce of courage he could scavage from the depth of his being he approached his crush.
Clearing his throat he said, "Lisa? Excuse me, Lisa?" Only for Lisa to ignore him as if he had never spoken. His nerves spiked and his stomach twisted. 'What if I was wrong? What if she's just like all the others?' Gru thought as his mind took a downward spiral into depressing memories.
He shook himself out of his memories and thought,'No! She has to be different! She's the first the person who noticed he was even there besides those who acknowledged him only to ridicule him. She couldn't be like them! Maybe she just didn't hear him?' With this thought in mind he gathered his shattered courage and tapped Lisa on her shoulder.
But before he could even open his mouth to ask her out on a date her friend's grating voice screamed out for the entire playground to hear, "Gru touched Lisa! Gru touched Lisa! Lisa's got Grudies!" And with that sentence the entire playground erupted into a mass of screaming children running in every direction until the only kid left was Gru himself.
Gru tucked his head against his chest as he felt the stinging in the back of his eyes which signified what would soon be burning tears.
'I was right, Lisa is just like all of the other kids! How could I be so stupid?! She only said hi because she wanted to laugh at me behind my back! Of course she didn't want to be my friend! Well, so what if Lisa doesn't like me? I've gone this long with no friends and this just proved that friends are unnecessary and overrated. I don't need friends! I'll show all of them how much better I am than them when I go to the moon! Even though having a friend would be nice...' Gru thought as he valiantly tried to fight back the tears.
Those people weren't worth his tears. Gru gave a defeated sigh. 'Who am I kidding. I'll never have a friend. I'm too different from everyone else.' However, unknown to Gru, as he was having his inner monologue he was being watched from the bushes by a pair of hostile red eyes.
