I've noticed I haven't written Death Note fics in a looooooong while.

So, enjoy this random one-shot! :D

"Ryuuzaki?" The soft voice of Light reached the ears of the famous detective.

"Yes, Yagami-kun?" It was late, almost nine o'clock, and they were getting ready to go to sleep. L turned to look at his companion.

The handsome youth was staring pensively out of the window, down at the glittering city below.

"Do you like dogs?"

Of all the things he had expected to come out of the young man's mouth, that was not one of them. L, the great detective, was momentarily stunned, and stared at the Kira suspect in shock, mouth slightly open and eyes wide.

"I… I… Excuse me?"

Light turned around and looked at L with confusion in his eyes.

"Do you like dogs, Ryuuzaki?" he asked again.

What brought this on?

"…No, Yagami-kun, I do not like dogs," he said after a while, sighing and pulling on his pajama pants. They were black and satin, very comfortable and loose enough for demanding acrobatic maneuvers, should they be necessary, but tight enough to prevent them from falling down without a belt.

The auburn-haired youth glanced at him curiously.

"Why not?" he inquired, loosening his tie from his neck.

"Because, Yagami-kun," he said, as though it were obvious. "Dogs are loud, noisy, they smell, they slobber, they bite, and they scratch and shed all over the place." He sighed and settled down on his side of the bed: there were actually two beds, but pushed so close together that with but a fleeting glance, they could look like one.

Light thought about that for a while.

"So, I take it you like cats?"

"I neither like nor dislike cats: they are simply better animals than dogs, most of the time." L sounded tired, but Light did not notice, being tired himself.

"Most of the time?" The raven-haired detective yawned and stretched his pale arms.

"Yes, Yagami-kun, most of the time. Cats have beautiful, sleek fur, and petal-pink paws, with retractable claws and soft meows, but dogs are, regrettably and unfortunately, far better at investigations and police work."

"But you still detest them, right?"

"Yes," murmured L, half-asleep. "Good night, Yagami-kun."

There was a pause. Had Raito fallen asleep, too?

"…Woof."

L turned in his bed to glare at the innocently grinning Light, feigning sleep, and rolled his eyes.

"I said, good night."
