Gah! I haven't updated since forever! I'm so sorry. I'm trying to get back to my older stories but it's not coming very well... Most of them have to be rewritten anyway. But beyond that, enjoy.

It was a perfect day. There was a soft breeze and not a cloud in the sky. But tears still smudged her heavy make-up. Wanda stood outside the Institute gates, looking in. She shivered, even though it was warm, and more tears dripped off her chin. She was on the outside now, like a spectator at a play or a child with a snow globe. She could look but she couldn't touch, couldn't interact.

Laughter pealed across the lawn. Tabitha was chasing Rogue, and the normally withdrawn girl could hardly run she was laughing so hard. Scott and Jean were sitting on top of Scott's convertible, her head resting on his shoulder. Lance was lying in the grass half asleep with Pietro using him as a pillow. Remy, John, and Warren were sitting in the dappled shade of a tree playing a card game. Bobby was making ice figures for Amara. Kitty and Piotr were sitting, making-out, on the picnic table. And Logan sat against the wall of the Institute, the powerful alpha male protecting his pack.

But they weren't what was making her so upset. Under the largest tree on campus was the boy she had come to love. Todd Tolansky was lying half on the grass and curled quite comfortably in Kurt Wagner's arms. Kurt's arms were curled tightly and protectively around Todd's shoulders, their legs were tangled together, and Kurt was feeding Todd scrambled eggs with a spoon he held in his tail. That should be her. He had liked her first. That could have been her, but she had pushed him away. She had wanted to test the limits of his affection for her, while not considering the consequences of finding them. And Todd was only slowly recovering.

The dark purple bags that had decorated his eyes for as long as she had known him were starting to fade. With proper daily meals he was returning to a healthy weight but his skin was no where near the rich colour it was before. He was more timid and withdrawn than ever before and he had only been back to school for a week.

Wanda gently lent forward and grasped one of the fence bars. She must have made some sound, her shoes on the sidewalk or her nails on the bar, because Kurt looked up suddenly and their eyes locked. Wanda reeled backwards; she had never seen such a hateful glare coming from Kurt's bight gold eyes. She could almost hear his low warning growl and saw him tighten reflexively, startling Todd. The smaller mutant gently kissed his boyfriend on the neck, to calm him down. She walked away then, she didn't, want Todd to see her.

Up until a few days ago Professor Xavier had banned the Brotherhood from the grounds, backed up by Logan's new security system, which kept even Wanda out, to allow for the least stressful recovery environment possible. As soon as the restraint had been lifted the boy's had jumped at the chance to visit, but Wanda had held back. They hadn't spoken since she's been to see him before the Professor had forced them out. She missed him; she missed him hopping after her calling her stupid pet names. But he had Kurt now and she was just going to have to live with that.
