He fucking hates ghouls.
"Ugly ass zombies," He calls them. "Not even good enough to lick the mud off my boots," He says frequently.
I always wanted to know why he hated them so much. I mean I hated them too. Don't get me wrong everything about them screams 'Abomination!'. I frankly have no idea how the hell they survived this long. And why they didn't have the good grace to just die. Drop off the face of what's left of this planet.
But at least with myself and others you could at least bring up the subject of Ghouls. Though we were all quick to glare, mutter about how they ruined the good atmosphere.
You couldn't even get a word in edgewise when you spoke about them in front of Gustavo.
So one day I set out to ask him. Oh I had asked him other times but like I said, you couldn't even finish a sentence if it had the word 'ghouls' in it.
But not today. I was on a mission. Never let it be said that Lydia Montenegro was a nobody! I would get my answers.
I cornered him by the lobby desk at one o'clock in the morning. No one else was around as far as I could see. I set to questioning him.
"Why hello Miss Lydia. Aren't you looking pretty tonight? Shouldn't a woman like you be getting her-"
"Just why is it you hate ghouls so much Gustavo?"
"-beauty sleep? What the hell are you talking about? Go away, I'm trying to secure the perimeter!"
"Oh come off it Gus. It's one o'clock in the morning. The only thing that could do us any harm now are Raiders and they aren't stupid. Not with Tenpenny probably doing his 'Wildlife Safari' upstairs. Now are you gonna answer me this time or not?"
Ha! That'll show him I'm not playing around!
He stared at me for so long I was pretty sure he had fallen asleep with his eyes open. Time felt like it was crawling to a stop. I have no idea when the tension descended onto me but I really wished it would leave.
That's when I noticed the look in his eyes. It was terrifying. Like someone he loved just died.
"Sometimes…I can hear the screams. Screaming as they realized what was happening to them. Sometimes it happened slow. Most of the time it was fast. Too fast."
Then he gets silent as if remembering himself. I just stare at him with wide eyes. I had no idea…
"It wasn't a pretty sight. And what they did after…"
I open my mouth to say something when he snaps out of it and stands up, gathering his sniper rifle and heading towards the entrance. "I fucking hate them Miss Lydia. And that's all you need to know."
Then he walks outside. I stand there for a couple more minutes then turn around and head to my room.
I won't ask him again.
