Prologue
Rain was driving down onto the billowing leaf canopy, mercilessly making its way towards the concrete floor below. The wind was no longer howling, but screaming into the night, like the battle cry of an army of men preparing for war. Trees quaked above the quivering floor, bending and moaning like breaking limbs in the brutal storm.
Skies that used to be blue and bright now mirrored burnt charcoal, while clouds became a mask of the moon, shadowing the ground of its light.
A crack of lightening tore the world in two, and the thunder that came soon after rolled across the heavens, as if the gods' fury had finally awakened.
Rain drops acted as ammunition, feeling as if they were piercing her skin as each drop hit her delicate features. The icy water mixed with tears in the darkness. The sound of her sobs disappeared with every shriek of the blowing gales.
They say that, in space, no one can hear you scream, but the cry of thunder works just as well.
Her body ached as each cry racked through her body, but Jade couldn't bring herself to stop crying.
Stop it. You left for a good reason, you left because you had to. He'll forgive you. She repeated the last sentence over and over, desperately trying to convince herself that she could be forgiven, but her heart wouldn't let her believe it.
Jade stared at her boots, watching as the rain water slid of the sides in waterfalls. She had never been more grateful for the invention of waterproof materials in her life.
She could hear the screams in her head, the sounds of smashing glass, a choked up voice. She felt the hand on her thigh, gripping onto it with small fingernails digging into the skin. She saw the piercing eyes staring into her own, pleading her to stay, begging her-
Get up.
Finally, she shook her head, pushing away the ice blue eyes in her mind. She got up off the soaking wet ground, grabbed her bag and continued through the trees.
