Sam's heart sunk the moment he saw Castiel's face. In that first, abrupt, startled rush of seeing an angel, an honest-to-god angel standing in their motel room, he'd forgotten his status.
Maybe status wasn't exactly the right word. But nevertheless, Sam was pretty sure that when it came to the supernatural hierarchy, he was just about as low as you could get, something disgusting, threatening, to be mistrusted.
That secret fear had plagued him for over a year now, and here was all the confirmation he needed, right there in the insurmountable gulf between Castiel and his own outstretched hand.
