"Letter to the Lost"

---

I can't taint my memories of you. You, who were my perfect other. They say I should marry again, but I can't forget you. I don't want to let you, nor my memory of you, go.

Who so effortlessly gave her ring to a pirate simply for her quest, I pray that I have not defiled your memory doing so. Somehow, I hoped that you'd forgive me for discarding one of the relics of our memory. It has come back, however, and the pirate has turned into one of Rabanastre's saviors.

We, who have created a future for Dalmasca, should look ahead. But, I keep looking back. Recalling your face, your calm expressions, and your smile, you are forever memorized in my mind. Selfishly, I ponder what it would be like with you alive. Though you have parted from the world physically, I cling to your memory, unwilling to let it divide from me.

You who were my inspiration, my motivation for various quests, rests somewhere beyond in the heavens. I was once thirsty for vengeance, seeing your visage from the Occuria lead me on. I furthered myself, only to realize what you'd have wished for. You were never the vindictive kind.

Peace is what I felt when I saw you smile. It is also what we together were working for, the connection between our kingdoms. You would not have wanted war, but somehow you were killed within one.

I live on, as do those who created a free Dalmasca. We all carry within our hearts the recollection of those dear who have left this living world. Most likely, it is grace that quiets our frustration at our turbulent past. It is the ambition for a better nation that propels us to forego our hatreds of the past to cement a safer world.

It is love that stirs in me as I anxiously await my time for the afterlife. It is duty that ties me to Ivalice.

One day, we will meet again, though I'm not sure when. Time may pass, but you are forever connected to my soul.

Please wait...for that is what I do each day.

Author's Notes:

Be kind and review. This was my first FFXII one-shot, written right after finishing the game. I hope it was somewhat enjoyable.
