Medusa startled awake at the sound of a great clattering in the entryway to her castle. She could hear someone cursing, trying to keep the object they had knocked over from making anymore noise, and she grinned maliciously. "Another knight come to take my head back to the king; this will be fun,"she said to herself as she slid out of bed. She glided down the hallway, not bothering to change out of her nightdress as she wanted to get this over with quickly and go back to bed. "Who dares disturb my slumber?" she boomed, earning a startled shriek from the intruder. She hid behind a pillar, waiting for the intruder to regain their composure and announce themselves.
After a moment, she heard, "I'm sorry, I didn't know anyone lived here. I was on my way back to the village and, well, I got a bit lost," the intruder confessed, embarrassment evident in their voice. Medusa's brow furrowed. No one had ever come across her castle by mistake - it had to be a trick. She stepped out from behind the pillar, enraged that someone would take her for such a fool, but stopped short at the sight in front of her. The intruder was not a knight in silver armor, but a beautiful young woman in a thin dress, shivering from the cold of the descending night. "Please," the woman said, "if you could just point me in the right direction, I'll be on my way. I didn't mean to disturb you. I just want to get home." Medusa stepped forward, searching for any reason to distrust her. She seemed innocent and sincere enough.
"I suppose I could-" Medusa paused as the woman turned at the sound of her voice. "Wait! Don't look at me!" The woman froze mid-turn. "Why?" "I-I'm disfigured. I don't want anyone to see me," Medusa half-lied. The woman smiled softly, turning fully so she was facing Medusa. "NO!" Medusa screamed, waiting for the woman to turn to stone. "What?! What is it?!" the woman shouted frantically, terror written on her face. Medusa paused in confusion, wondering how the woman was immune to her curse. It was then that she noticed the glaze over the woman's eyes, and she understood. "You're...blind," Medusa gasped.
