…
Alma del Mar stood emotionless as she watched the front door close.
Her husband just left to meet Jack Twist, again…
Slowly, she walked over to the bathroom and grabbed a tall white vase.
"Jenny, Junior, go play on the swings." She instructed.
The two girls nodded happily before they bounded out the door, just as their father had just moments before.
Grabbing the vase, she walked over to the kitchen and slammed it against the counter.
"Damn you, Ennis del Mar…" She uttered to herself as she started to pick up pieces of money that were scattered amongst the glass. As soon as she counted enough, she went in search of a baby sitter.
…
Alma stared up at the large house in front of her. No one she knew could ever afford that place.
She stood up straighter and flattened her skirt. As the door swung open, Alma looked up at the prettiest girl she's ever seen.
"Hello?" The lady smiled.
"Lureen Twist?" Alma asked.
"That's me."
"I'm Alma del Mar." She greeted. "We need to talk."
The woman paused slightly. Alma didn't move…and soon enough, Lureen spoke.
"Oh," Lureen widened the door. "Don't just stand there, then. Come on in."
"You've got a big house." Alma gasped as she walked in. "Must be worth a ton."
"Yeah…" Lureen nodded as she closed the door. "My daddy pays for most of it. He sells all those big farming equipment. Heard of Newsome tractors?"
"My, those things are worth thousands!"
"They sure are." Lureen smiled. "Want anything to drink? Just made myself a nice cup o' coffee."
"Texan's do drink coffee." Alma murmured.
"What's that?" Lureen asked.
"Nothing. Coffee would be great." Alma smiled weakly. "Thank you."
"So…" Lureen started as she handed Alma a steaming mug. "What brings you down her to Texas? Long trip…"
"How do you know it's long?" Alma asked, taking a long sip out of her mug.
"Please…" Lureen laughed. "I know everything about your husband, Ennis. Assumin' that the two of ya'll live together, it's a darn long trip out here."
"Ennis?"
"That's the name Jack mumbles in his sleep." Lureen confirmed.
"So you know?" Alma whispered.
"'Bout Ennis?" Lureen asked. "Never met him, but I sure as hell know him."
"And Jack," Alma corrected. "About Ennis and Jack."
"They're buddies." Lureen told here. "They're out there now, doing something, ain't they?"
Alma took a deep breath. Obviously Lureen didn't know. Alma had to do what she came here to do…
"Mrs. Twist." Alma sighed. "Jack and Ennis? They're queer."
Alma braced herself to the dramatic reaction she was sure to come next.
Lureen simply nodded slowly and took another sip of her coffee.
"Mrs. Twist?" Alma asked cautiously.
"Please, call me Lureen."
"Lureen…" Alma tried again. "Did you not hear me?"
"Sure did."
"About my husband and your husband being…"
"Queer." Lureen placed her cup down. "I'm not some clueless trophy wife, Alma. I've known what was going on."
"And you just let it be?" Alma exclaimed.
Lureen simply shrugged. "When'd you find out?"
"While back." Alma admitted. "Caught them kissin' when Jack first came around."
"I don't know when I found out, myself." Lureen told her. "I just grabbed clues here and there.
"It don't bother you?" Alma asked.
"Not much," Lureen told her. "Jack's a good father. Never hurt me or Bobby. I love him, and he loves me back to an extent…but I'm not Ennis. As long as he's happy…"
"You're a good wife." Alma sighed.
"I try."
