Disclaimer: I do not own Eragon

Genre: family, romance

Characters: Eragon, Brom, Selena

A/N: I was just curious to see what would happen to see if this would have occurred so I made it. I know some of this isn't happening at the right time of day but I figured the plot worked better this way. So please bear with me. Thanks.

Having just been injured by the Ra'zac, Brom lay still gasping for breath, blood quickly staining the bandages wrapped around his torso.

"Eragon get the wineskin!" Brom demanded. Eragon argued for a bit but finally relented. While retrieving the wineskin from Brom's saddlebag, he found a well worn letter addressed to Brom in curly writing. Resolving to read it later he retrieved the wineskin and trotted over to Brom. Obliging to Brom's request he rubbed the wine onto his hand, revealing a Gedwey Ignasia. Eragon listened intently to Brom's story of how he too had been a dragon rider, once upon a time.

Eragon lay down next to Sephira shocked at the words that had just been spoken to him. He was close to sleep when he remembered the letter. He reached into his tunic, fetching the well worn piece of parchment.

In faded letters it said,

"Brom if I have left you felling torn, I apologize. But I too left torn. Yet once I found that a child was to be born to us, I was fearful not for us but for the child.

I know you would have loved and cared greatly for the little one, but for their sake I am sure you will understand. This decision was the hardest I have ever made but it is done.

I hope one day we will be reunited and our love rekindled. I will birth the child where he will be safe, and hope they will grow into a likeness of you. Shall my fortune come true; our child will grow strong, and come to be a great young man. He will be the first of your kin and the first token of our love. And due to these I will name him in honor of you. To all he will be known as, Eragon.

With all my love, goodbye,

Selena

Eragon sat paralyzed, the letter in his hand. His throat ached and he felt the silent tears fall. The light outside began to grow, and Brom began to gasp for breath in a desperate attempt to live. Eragon stood and ran to his side but he was too late, Brom was gone. Eragon closed the eyes that had been looking at him, saying good-bye to his newfound Father.
