I admit it, I admit it. While I'm not a huge Adam Sandler fan, I am absolutely obsessed with Jack & Jill. It makes me laugh like crazy, and I am absolutely and completely in love with the character of Jill. Who DOESN'T love a good drag act anyway? ;) Well, anyway, as much as I love the movie, I couldn't help but feel that there are should've been a scene like this in it. So I wrote one.
Act of Kindness
" Jack?"
" Jill?"
" It's Momma."
In that busy Bronx hospital, Jack was met by a silence that he had never known before. As the world and all its inhibitions continued around him, Jack just couldn't see or hear anything of it. Everything to him was just one big blur, and all he could hear was the pounding of his own heart. He looked at a sign by a flight of stairs that read, 'Cardiology,' with an arrow pointing upward, and he immediately raced toward it, fighting to climb every step.
After he had reached the top, he pushed the doors open and nearly galloped down the darkened corridor to meet his twin sister. But Jill wasn't there. In mind, at least. Jill was decades away, still hiding in the cosiness and safety of her mother's womb with her brother faithfully by her side. Jack watched his sister closely, and within moments, he got it. He felt her pain. Even though he would never admit it.
" Jill?" he hesitated to say. " Jill, I'm-I'm here."
Jill nodded her head slowly as she continued to stare through the glass of her mother's room. She never took her eyes for a second. She sniffed somewhat noisily, which prompted Jack to show her one little act of kindness.
" Come 'ere!" he muttered, outstretched his arms.
The twins embraced one another when Jill finally began to sob.
" We can't lose her, Pagogo! We just can't!"
Jack shuddered slightly, which caused him to deepen the hug, and he closed his eyes as he did so. He rested his chin on his sister's shoulder and brought his hands up further her spine as an attempt to shush her. Deep in the arms of her brother, Jill's tears stained the back of his shirt. But even he didn't care. And when their hug was done, they stood side by side, hand in hand, as they waited for the moment they were both dreading.
