Chapter One: Midnight Arrivals

--

San Francisco, Calfornia: Present Day

--

She popped the top of the soda can, allowing the fizz to escape as her brown-blue tinted eyes took in the information on her black laptop's screen, her eyes skimming the lines of the website to help her with a research paper on the New England Salem Witch Trials of 1692 to help ensure she pulled up her history grade- but the lines before her were becoming increasingly blurry as the hours went by.

Taking her first swig of the Diet Coke, she rubbed the tin against her forehead in order to rid herself of the ever-increasing headache which was coming on, making her even more drowsy than she already was; the paper wasn't due for another week but she had been unable to concentrate on the task at hand with the other assignments she'd had to hand in over the previous days- which were quite a few.

Becoming ever increasingly fed up, she was about to call it for the night when her cell phone began to ring out Back In Black by AC/DC, causing her to groan as she picked up the offending object, flipping it open, and bringing it up to her ear as she answered tiredly.

"Hello?"

--

In the driver's seat of the Black '67 Chevrolet Impala, Dean Winchester put the cell phone in his hands free speaker in the holdall between he and Sam's seats as the elder Winchester smiled, hearing the tiredness in Kate's voice as he drove them over the Golden Gate Bridge; he and Sam's belongings were laid out on the back seats after their roadtrip from Stanford where Sam had returned after taking a year out after Jessica was murdered by the Yellow Eyed Demon who had been responsible for the death of Dean and Sam's mother, Mary

"Hey Kate, you okay?"

Kate put the laptop screen down as she got up to switch the plug off at the mains.

"Hey Dean, just tired. It's nearly 1AM. What's going on?"

Dean checked his rear view mirror as he changed lane, Sam's breathing the only other sound as he slept with his head against the seat rest after Dean had taken over the driving an hour ago. Kate hadn't been expecting them for another day-or-so as the two men had planned on catching up with John, but had decided to hang out with their younger sister for a while; Like Sam, Kate had opted for school rather than hunting, but Dean would go between his younger siblings when he wasn't on a job and spent a few days with them- he didn't resent their decision and still phoned them continually for information as Kate was in contact with Bobby Singer and Ellen Harvelle almost daily as they were her godparents and so was always up to date on any cases her oldest brother might be interested in.

"Change of plans, Kat, we're not meeting up with Dad, so we're on our way to yours now. Is that cool? What about Amy, Bree and Willow?"

He asked, referring to the girls who shared the Victorian Manor- which stood in the San Francisco suburbs- but who were currently with family, leaving the place practically empty; John had helped Kate with some of the money and the place always had three extra bedrooms- one of which, Dean had made his own as the four girls had given him a spare key in case he needed to stay when they weren't in.

"They went to their folks for Mid-Term so the place is empty and I doubt they'd mind anyhow. How long till you get here?" Kate yawned as she fingered the top of her soda can.

"Um, about Ten minutes." Dean answered as he directed the car around a local park near to the campus where Kate was studying. "Any parking space for my baby?"

Kate smiled tiredly and said through a yawn while proceeding to check the guestroom Sam would be living out of was presentable.

"When you get here you can either have her in the driveway or you can have the garage space seen as Bree took her jeep."

"Excellent. Be there soon."

"Okay, Bye"

--

"Rise and shine psychic boy,"

Sam jerked awake at Dean's chipper command, he could swear that Dean could probably pass as a Vampire as he slept most of the day away and yet partied all night long.

"Dean, come on," He groaned as he rubbed sleep from his Brown eyes, his surroundings still blurry from sleep.

"If you wake up for ten minutes, you'll have a warm bed courtesy of our little sister who sounded just as whacked out as you are" Dean teased as he killed the ignition as he parked in the driveway of the Manor where Kate and her friends had scrimped and saved to Buy so they could live through both college and university.

"Because Kate is doing essays which could determine her final grade while I have been stuck in here with you for the past fifteen hours just to get from one part of California to here. Anyone would think you took the long way round." Sam groaned as he pushed his side door open and took a long, luxurious stretch as Dean opened the back doors and took out the duffels out with their clothes as the two brothers took the few steps to the varnished door, Dean rapping on the oak door as the porch light came on.

Dean couldn't reply to the remark as the two brothers heard the locks turn and the hall light wash over them as Kate came to the door now dressed in a blue string top and trouser combo with her brown hair falling free about her shoulders just above the elbow as her glazed eyes took them in while giving them a tired smile before ushering them in.

"Come on in,"

"Hey Kate," Sam gave his own tired smile as he enveloped her in a hug which she returned lightly ever since they had decided to split from hunting, the two younger siblings had kept in constant contact and regularly met up over the breaks to hang out either in Stanford or San Francisco for the day. Both usually stayed up late when essays were due and so kept themselves amused in order to stay awake to complete their tasks.

The two separated and Kate turned to Dean who had dumped his bag down by a small table opposite the living room before turning back to his youngest sibling who used one hand to check the door was locked.

"Dean," she said through a yawn she could no longer contain.

"Kate," he nodded. The one thing anyone who knew Dean well or who had met him was that he wasn't one for, as Dean himself put it, having 'chick-flick' moments with all the emotional stuff which surrounded them.

The two siblings- a ten year age gap between them- faced each other before Kate decided to take the first step and stood in front of her brother, a mere six inches shorter than him, before putting her arms around in a hug. Sam couldn't hide the smile creeping up on him at the look of awkwardness on Dean's face, his older brother nevertheless releasing the tension he hadn't noticed had fallen on his body and brought leather-covered arms to envelope his sister's bare shoulders in a light embrace- becoming more comfortable as he felt a sudden wave of peace wash over him; undoubtedly coming from his sister who was a blood-witch by birth courtesy of her mother, Shannon, who had died when she was a year old.

Kate gave him a gentle squeeze before pushing herself gently away as she once again yawned.

"You wanna' put the Impala in the garage?" she asked as Sam dragged his feet into the living room. "If you do, the keys are in the small bowl while I show Sammy to his room before i go to bed and before you come up with one of your ideas to fo to the nearest bar and get drunk."

Dean shrugged and nodded at the point before reaching over to pick up a group of small keys on a ring and went toward the kitchen where the other door leading to the garage was so he could take his baby in for the night; he had only used the garage once before as there was a set of toys in there to help with repairs.

Kate gently shook Sam who had collapsed into a nearby chair before lifting Dean's duffle to put in his 'room'.

"Night Dean," she mumbled as the two stumbled up stairs to the first floor. Dean watched them go with a weak smile on his face as his family- his family- were back together (almost, he thought,) before he called back in a much quieter voice which was unlike the normal Dean Winchester.

"G'Night,"
