Just a bit of James & Lily fluff written a long time ago (that's why Lily's birthday isn't conform to canon). Please review!

She was born on April Fools' Day.

Yes, Lily Evans, Head Girl, top of the class, his Lily Evans, was born on April Fools' Day. It had always made James Potter smile. Usually he didn't give her any present for her birthday. They weren't actually friends; she even used to hate him. But it was different now.

"Good morning, James," Lily said.

James got up from the couch of the Heads' apartments' living room and flashed her a smile.

"Good morning, Lily."

They were in their seventh year at Hogwarts, but each time he saw her, James still felt butterflies in his stomach. What had changed was that he had learnt not to make a fool of himself in front of her. He was glad they got on better. He had not asked her out for several months; he couldn't even remember when he had last asked her. Nervously running his hand through his messy hair, James handed Lily his present.

"Happy birthday," he said, smiling gently.

"How sweet of you!"

As she unwrapped the present she genuinely smiled back at him. He loved her smile.

"Oh James…"

Her emerald eyes were sparkling with joy and emotion as she studied his present. It was a pretty wooden, piano-shaped musical box that played Beethoven's "Für Elise". Before she knew what she was doing, she was holding James in her arms.

"You remembered…" she said softly.

Her parents had been killed by Voldemort over a year ago. James had run on her as she was crying her heart out. She had shouted incoherent things at him. One of them was how well her mother played the piano, how she used to play "Für Elise" to her whenever she felt bad. At the time she had not thought that James had paid any attention to what she had said.

"Thank you," she said sincerely as she pulled back. "It's beautiful."

"I'm glad you like it," he whispered.

He wiped the tears from her face. Her eyes stared off into space for a moment and he somehow felt she needed this silence.

"How did you find it? It's a Muggle thing," she finally said.

"I went to a Muggle store. I didn't even know what a piano looked like! They must have thought I was mental."

They shared a smile and he noticed that she seemed lost in thoughts again. The song was still playing and James found himself humming softly to it. After a while, she took a deep breath and looked into his eyes.

"James, will you go out with me?"

He just stared back at her, bewildered. Suddenly, he remembered all the times when he'd asked "go out with me, Evans?". He couldn't believe she was asking him out.

"Is that an April Fools' Day joke?"

Lily laughed softly. "No, I'm serious. Go on, say yes before I change my mind!"

"Yes, of course," he said happily.

She smiled back at him, finding his happiness infectious. She looked at the musical box again. Funny how an object made her admit her feelings for James.

"Shall we, Miss Evans?" he said, holding out his arm for her.

She took it and smiled. James Potter, a gentleman, after all? As time proved, the answer was definitely yes.
