Her head lolled to the side, and drool escaped from her mouth. Sousuke Sagara smiled, looking down at the girl tucked in his arms. He had just gotten back from his latest mission, and even though he was exhausted, he had to come over and see her. During the battle on this assignment, he had nearly died. His AS was severely damaged, and in all actuality, he was lucky to be alive. Vivid images appeared in his mind as he thought back to the incident that had happened a few days ago.
Bright red blood gushed from the wound on his side as he was ripped out of his machine by the enemy AS towering over him. Flinging him to the ground, the enemy lifted its gun and pointed it directly at him, ready to shoot. Sousuke felt around him, trying to find a gun, a knife – a weapon of any kind that could possibly save him. His groping hands returned empty handed. He rolled over on his side and coughed, splattering the ground with the sticky substance. In that moment, he knew he was going to die. Images rushed through his head, from his war-torn childhood to the present. The picture that wouldn't leave his mind was of an angel with long, teal-colored hair. She smiled at him, her chocolate eyes shining with joy. He remembered that moment vividly – it was one of the rare instances where she actually looked happy while in his presence. As he lay, gasping on the ground, he held onto that memory in hopes that maybe, just maybe, it would bring him home. His chest gave one last final heave, and then his body went still, the only pause in a raging battlefield.
Mao had saved him that day. She had knocked the gun out of the enemy's hand in a surprise ambush, and then carried Sousuke to a chopper that had immediately taken him to a nearby military hospital. Grimacing as the girl in his arms sited, Sousuke realized that it possibly hadn't been the best idea to be discharged from the hospital so soon. But he had to see her. He couldn't forget her face, the face that had given him hope on the battlefield. The face that was meant to bring him home. As he looked down at the treasure he was gingerly holding against him, he realized that he had finally made it. It took him a while, but he finally understood things now – wherever Kaname was, that was his home.
