I watched her grow. I couldn't help but be around her. She was all I thought about. Bella and I got into many physical, although I would never hurt her, and screaming matches over my feelings toward her daughter. But I imprinted on Renesmee and there was no going back.
I knew how sick it was to be in love with an infant but it's a longing I can't describe. I just had to be near her. I fought myself and the dire need to protect her. It was no use.
Rensesmee was now seventeen and growing more beautiful by the second. And more dangerous. She was very powerful. Being half vampire- half human gave her advantages that the others didn't. She could walk into the sun, lead a normal life but she was anything but normal.
I flashed back to when she came to me for advice…
Sobbing Renesmee walked into my garage. It was raining so hard I could barely make out her shape. But I could smell her. I always knew when she was near.
She wiped her eyes with her delicate hands. I had to fight the urge to hold it in mine.
"Jacob, are you busy?" Her eyes were tortured with pain. Something I could recognize.
"No. Absolutely not. What's up?" I leaned on my newly rebuilt motorcycle.
She looked at me and smiled slightly. Grateful that I would hear her out. Little did she know, there wasn't anything I wouldn't do for her.
"My mom and dad are always so busy. And when I do try to talk to them they treat me like a three year old. I didn't know who else to turn to with this…" She looked nervous. That made me anxious. I wanted to hold her, but I didn't want to take advantage of whatever trust she had for me so I waited patiently for her to continue.
"Jake," She looked so much like her mother sometimes. Innocent eyes in a world filled with evil. "I can do things. I did something today that I already regret."
I placed my wrench on the garage floor next to the other tools and walked over to her. She held her head down in shame. I didn't touch her but I was close enough that she could lean on me if she needed.
"Tell me." I said gently. She sighed and began to speak.
"Today, I was practicing my…er, skills," She had many. "And Leah stopped by."
I was surprised by this. Leah never went to the Cullens unless I was there. "Go on." I urged her. She was so small. So sweet. So beautiful. I found it hard to concentrate with her so close. I tried not to think of how perfectly she fit in my arms.
"Well," She hesitated, "I found out I can do something else today. I can cause pain with my mind. I'm not proud of it."
I wasn't sure she was going to continue but the rest came out in a whisper.
"Leah, well, she was making fun of you and I got angry. I told her to stop. She didn't listen. Then she said you were only my friend because of my parents and that made me even more angry. She said that what I mean to you is nothing and that even though you hang around me it's only as a favor to protect me from the Vulturi or any other danger." Tears were streaming down her face.
I could kill Leah for this. She still has not imprinted and it was turning her into a spiteful wolf. Bitter. Angry.
"Can I tell you something Renesmee?" She looked at me and waited.
"I hang around you because there is no where else I'd rather be. You're such a fun, loving, beautiful spirit and you amaze me daily. How could I not want to be your…" I was exposing my soul and I knew it, so I paused and re-worded what I was about to say. "How could I not want to be your friend?"
She smiled with such happiness that it took my breath away. She will always take my breath away.
I was on the way to the Cullen's now. Carlisle had some urgent news. I heard fear in his voice. I began to run. I didn't stop until I reached the house. My life was waiting inside. And I would do anything to protect her.
