Anna sighed as she watched the ship leave the shore. To her, it only meant another three to four months of being lonly again. The cliff where she was currently sitting was not only the place where she had met him, but the place where she had to say goodbye, as well.
The morning was crisp and foggy. Can this really be happening? She sat down with her legs hanging over the edge, as she tilted her head backwards, reflecting on what had happened the morning before.
"Good morning, Kai!" sge said cheerfully as he entered the room. She could tell that he had ust woken up. Anna could always sense when he came into a room. Without turning around, she asked him how he slept. She didn't mind not sharing a room with him. Living with Kai was good enough for her, so she didn't mind following Voltaire's rules.
Kai grumbled to himself. "I got a call last night." His voice was flat and serious.
When Anna heard this, she dropped the plate she had been washing. The sound of the shattering tray echoed throughout the room like it would on a mountain. Her eyes were wide.
"You don't mean..." she mumbled.
"I'm sorry, Anna," he replied. "They want me back."
When she turned around, he was already in his uniform.
She turned her attention to the floor. "I thought it was strange that you were up so early." It was clear in her voice that she wanted to cry.
"Anna," Kai said softly.
"You always do that," she said flatly.
It wasn't hard to tell that Kai was confused.
"Yyou always do that!" She yelled louder.
"Quiet, Anna! Don't wake up my Grandfather!" he hushed.
"You tell me that you're leaving, wait for it to hurt me, and then you take that soft tone that you know makes things harder for me!" By this point, tears were flowing.
He came forward and held her tightly. "Anna, will you wait for me again?" she accepted his embrace; she heard the pain in Kai's heart, too.
"Kai..." she cried.
Later that evening, all the troupes that had been called gathered at the Hiwatari estate. This was about the fourth time that it had happened. By now, Anna was used to it, but it was still painful to see all the men in uniforms, ready for war. The pain it must be to be out there, she thought. The only thing that made her feel better was the get-togethers she had with some of the other wives.
By nine o'clock, there was to much pain echoing in Anna's heart, so she left for the cliff where she had met Kai Hiwatari.
Inside of the estate, Kai asked around, in search of his fiancee, until, that is, he realized where she would be at a time like this.
When he reached the cliff, he heard her crying, like the first time they had met.
"Kai.. why do you have to go?" she asked."It's a war that doesn't involve Russia! Why does it call for russian soldiers?"
He held her again. "I'm sorry, Anna," he said. "but you know that I'll come back to you again. I'll be back in about three months."
She realized that he must go through the same pain as she did when they were apart.
As she watched the ship sail into the distance, she prayed for his safety.
"Kai, I never want to have to live without you."
Two and a half months later...
The wife of Yuri, Brian and Ian accompanied Anna in during one of their get-togethers. To them, it was like having a support group.
A knock was heard at the door. Anna ran to the door, hoping to see Kai, only to fing the mailman standing there with a letter.
When Anna took the letter, she ripped it open faster than anyone could have after reading 'General Dickinson' across the front.
To whom it may concern,
We are sorry to inform that Kai Hiwatari has...
Anna's eyes were to filled with tears to read another word.
"This isn't fair!" she cried. "It's supposed to be a war that doesn't involve Russia!"
The wives came to her side.
"Why did my russian soldier have to die?"
