Lucy was talking with Aslan, alone, for she was the only one who had believed he was there. They were lying amid a pile of leaves and grass, a comfy but slightly dirty seat.
The conversation had, at first, been cheery and light, but now Lucy had grown serious. She had questions that needed answering. "Aslan, what happened to everybody?"
Aslan made a humming sound in his throat before replying, "They died Lucy, you ought to know that."
"Yes, I do know that but I mean, how? The beavers, Oreious, Tumnus..." Lucy's small voice trailed off.
"I know of the special connection you had with Tumnus."
Lucy looked relieved."Oh you do?"
"Yes child, I do. I know he loved you like no other soul ever could."
"I loved him too. He was such a dear fawn. The best of friends."
"That he was."
"Aslan, what happened to him?"
"He lived a long and generous life and then died in his sleep one day."
"I hate the thought of him sitting, waiting for me to return."
Aslan nodded, "He waited his whole life but he knew you weren't coming back."
"At least not in his life time." Lucy said sadly.
"My child, would you like to know where is buried?"
Lucy felt hesitant to answer. She had loved Tumnus, but she was unsure whether or not she wanted to see his last resting place. She was so used to seeing him in the garden, or standing by a window looking out. Lucy could still remember the way his face always lit up when he saw her, or how excited he became when planning a special picnic or luncheon with Lucy. Oh how she missed those days. The slow walks around the garden, playing among the waves together, watching the stars at night, all of that was gone now.
Looking Aslan in the eye, Lucy said, "Yes Aslan, I would like to see where Tumnus is buried."
Standing up, Aslan spoke gently. "Get on my back child and I will take you there."
Lucy clambered up on his back, remembering the first time she had done this.
Aslan shook his head, mane flying. "Hold on!" He said before taking off at a run. He ran across the open field, feet pounding on the ground.
Lucy grasped his mane with her hands, holding tightly. Lucy closed her eyes, mane soft beneath her fingers, breeze in her hair.
Aslan told her to duck as they went into the forest, avoiding low branches and tree trunks. After what seemed like a heartbeat they had come to a small, open clearing. Aslan came to a stop and Lucy slid off his back, looking around. She could see a log, part of it decaying and the rest of it covered in moss. Beside the log was a bed of rocks, with weeds growing out of it.
"Over here." Came Aslan's voice.
Lucy looked over to see Aslan had moved away and was now on the opposite side of the clearing. Lucy went to Aslan's side and looked down. There was what appeared to be a grave, covered by grass and flowers.
Dropping to her knees, Lucy felt the grass underneath her hands. Looking over her shoulder to say something to Aslan she noticed he had gone, disappeared.
"Oh Tumnus." Lucy whispered. "I never even got to say goodbye."
Lucy could almost hear Tumnus speaking in her ear. "It's all right Lucy."
"No, it's not. I lost so much. My friends, my family, you."
"You didn't lose me. I've always been with you."
Lucy started crying as she sat on Tumnus's grave. All her past memories were flooding in, making it hard to think or even breathe. "Tumnus, I love you! I always did and I always will!"
"I love you too Lucy."
Lucy rocked back on her heels and sighed. Wiping away her tears she felt happy, relieved for not only was she back in Narnia but she had been reunited with Tumnus too.
