I cautiously stepped towards Jacques, and we both smiled at each other. We were both hesitant, yet curious. As if we were truly seeing each other and our world for the first time. As we stepped even closer, something strange was happening to his eyes. They weren't normal now, but changing. They weren't quite the same as before, I couldn't quite place what it was though. The same shape yes, the same basic pattern, yes. I had always known that his eyes were strangely light and clear, but this was different. We stepped as close as we probably could be, and…

I jerked awake, and was alarmed by my sudden awakening. I blinked twice and looked around my room, the standard bedroom with a desk, bed, and dresser. Trying to remember the dream, I smoothly slid out of bed and made my way over to the dresser. Pulling out a tunic and pants, I heard Mother calling from the other room. "Carmen! Wake up!"

Still puzzled over the dream, I furrowed my brow and walked to the kitchen. My little brother, Ian, was eating, and my Mother and Father were preparing to sit down also. I made my way over to the table, plopped down, and began to eat. My Father talked about his Bicycle Repair Job, and my Mother talked about her Teaching job. "I just hate it when I have to correct the language on the Fours," she muttered. Ian looked up nervously and went back to eating. He has a terrible time pronouncing certain words with the letter "R" in them.

"Okay, so who wants to share his or her dream first?" inquired Father, when everyone was finished eating. "I'll go!" Ian offered enthusiastically, "So I was riding my bicycle, and I fell off. So I got up, and some children were laughing at me. I asked them why, and they said it was funny." He frowned at his memory, but then looked up at Father for some sort of explanation. "I do not see it as funny." "Well, were the children younger?" "Yes." "Younger children do not know as much as you do, so you must be patient with them." "Yes, Father."

I did not see how that would serve as a proper explanation as the dream, but let go of the worry and focused on my family. "I did not dream," my mother explained. "Neither did I" my father said, while glancing my way. "What about you, Carmen?" I said nothing for a couple seconds, but began, "I do not remember my dream well. Or at least, not the entire thing. I remember here and there. But at one part, I was slowly stepping towards Jacques, and his eyes kept…changing." It was difficult to explain to my family, least of all myself. "But we were smiling, and we leaned in, and I woke up." I surprised myself by realizing this last part. I smiled inside myself, a new, strange, and unfamiliar emotion now unfolding itself inside me. My parents looked at each other quickly, but I noticed my Mother smile quickly, too.

"Ian, you go get ready to go school. We need to talk to Carmen privately." Ian nodded, and headed to his room to collect his school items, and then waited outside. Turning their attention back to me, (I was somewhat nervous to see what they had to say,) they smiled. "Carmen," my Mother said delicately, "At one point in everyone's life, usually a little bit older then you are now, people begin to take the pills." I was curious now, I have never heard of the pills. "Why when they are older?" I asked. "Well, it usually happens around when people are 11, but it happens for different people at different times." I smiled to myself. I was only a Nine, soon to be a Ten. Father got out of his chair, went over to a cabinet, and pulled out a small bottle full of capsules. "Take one of these every morning," he explained. I nodded. Then he smiled. "Now get to school." I smiled back and left for school, wondering about the dream and the capsules the entire time.
