A Promise from the Past

Bella and Edward had been friends since they were born. Both of their families had been friends since this tiny little town of Forks had formed. Kind of hard to not be when the town only has about 300 people living in it.

When they were six years old they went to the playground. Nothing special about that, except this was the day that would stay with them forever.

Flash Back

POV Bella

"Bella?" Edward asked.

"Yes, Eddie?" I said smiling. I always thought it was funny how he hated that nickname ; the one Emmett and I gave him. Emmett is my older brother and Edward's best friend. He's seven and also has a crush on my best friend Rosalie (but she prefers everyone to call her Rose.) He just won't admit it. I'll get it out of him somehow someday. Oh! You must be wondering who Rose is! Well she is another one of my best friends. She is Emmett's age. Even though she is one year older than me, we love playing together.

"Bella, I told you not to call me that!" he shouted, frowning.

I just laughed, "Why do you hate that nickname so much?"

"Uh…well…um…" Edward said nervously.

"Edward, why are you acting all nervous?" I asked confused.

"Well…Bella…I .. I like you…and I was wondering…if when we're older… if you would marry me?"

There was a long silence; I just stared at Edward in shock.

"Bella are you going to reply?" Edward asked fiddling with his hands.

"Um… I like you too Edward…and of course I'll marry, but when we're older." I said smiling.

Back to Present

A/N: Setting: Edward and Bella walking home from school. They are both in the eight grade. Rose and Emmett are in ninth grade. They meet jasper when they were in 3rd grade. He is in the grade as Bella and Edward. P.S. they haven't meet Alice yet.)

"Hello…earth to Bella?" , Edward said waving his hand in front of my face.

"Uh…yeah… what's up?" Edward looked at me and smiled, "What are you smiling at?" I asked, trying to sound tough, but as you guess it didn't work.

"I was asking before you zoned out, if you're trying out for sports this year?" Edward asked smirking. Edward already knew the answer to the question; I always try out for sports. A/N: Bella is not a klutz in this fanfiction, she loves sports and video games, but she is kind of gothic, and Edward is like really popular and preppy, but he still hangs out with Bella.

"What do you think num-nuts…" I said laughing.

"Of course you are… what are you trying out for this year?" he asked.

"Um…let see…soccer, track, and swimming. But swimming doesn't start till summer, so just soccer and track. What about you?" I asked, Edward always tries out for football and track. He was the captain of the football team last year.

"Same sports, I always try out for," he said laughing. Oh how I loved his laugh. I had been in love with Edward since I was six years old. I could never tell him how I felt. He wouldn't feel the same way and even if he did, we can't date because of our different social differences. He is the hottest prep in our school and I'm just an outsider, you know the girl that's always sitting in the back with her head in a book with headphones in, that's me.

"Cool, do you think they're going to make you captain again?" I asked.

"I don't know, we'll just have to wait and see." He said looking off into the distance. I wonder what could be on his mind.

"Edward, you look like you're thinking about something extremely hard, what are you thinking about?" I asked him, I wonder if he's worried about tryouts, I thought, no that can't be it, Edward never gets worried about tryouts.

"Bella have you ever like someone, but you didn't know how they felt?" he asked.

"A long time ago," I said. Ha! Yeah a long time ago! Not! I thought to myself smiling. "Why do you ask?"

Edward started to turn red, "well I have this crush…on a girl that I've know for a long time…and I was thinking about asking her out."

I looked at Edward with surprise, why is he talking about this with me and not Emmett?

"Let me guess you're going to ask out…Emma Sterling, right?"

"No," He said shaking his head looking down at the ground.

"Lauren Song?" I said laughing.

"No." He smiled a little as he kicked a rock out of his way.

"Please don't tell your going to ask out Jessica Keith?"

"EWW! No, she is vile. Even if she is popular, I wouldn't date her!" He said with wide eyes.

"Then who are you going to ask out?" I giggled, but my heart was beating a mile a minute. I was afraid to hear Edward say he wanted to date someone. That he wanted to be with someone who wasn't me.

"Bella…Will you go out with me?" He blushed and meet my gaze.

I stared at Edward wide eyed and mouth hanging open.

No way! Edward Cullen, the hottest preppy guy in my school, just asked me out! I must look like an idiot just standing here. Come on Bella snap out of it! I thought to myself.

"Edward I…"
