Author's note: I'M BACK BABYYYY!! :D I've been having some ENORMOUS writers' block, and have just had a ridiculously busy summer, so I haven't had a chance to write in…forever. School starts Monday…T-T But I've been reading so many HieixBara stories that I now adore that couple. Scary OxO. Eventually, (and it was impulse-driven, btw,) I HAD to attempt to make my own crappy short story. Remember, I haven't written in months, AND this is my first HieixBara, so you can't beat me if it sucks. XD Oh yah, this is basically set after the entire show, so I can do anything I want, Muahahahaha!!
Disclaimer: I don't own YYH, neither does my pet turtle Kenji, and I doubt you do either.
Now without further ado, on with the show!! :3

It had been over three years since he'd seen any of them. Three years of working for Mukuro as her right-hand man and keeping the ningens in their own pathetic little world. After a time, he had the urge to move on… like there was another place where he felt he belonged, though a word of this would never leave his lips to another. The next day, he made his way to Mukuro's private chambers to request for release. When she asked why, he simply gave the reply that, with the Makai Tournaments set in place, the "Three Kings" were now really no more than mayors or governors, and as a result she no longer needed him as an heir.
"Very well then, Hiei." She replied. "One question still confounds me: Where will you go?"
"That is none of your concern. Trust that, wherever I roam, I can take care of myself." He stated before turning and flitting out of sight.
Mukuro smiled. In Hiei, that basically meant that he didn't know WHY he was going where he was going, but reassuring her that he would be fine. "I hope you know what you're doing, Hiei…"
After several hours of traveling, Hiei came upon the place where the old Reikai barrier once stood to block the path between the Makai and Ningenkai, and felt a miniscule stir of amusement as he recalled the amount of evidence of totalitarianism pilled against Reikai that resulted in the barrier's destruction. He shook his head. Some people are willing to believe every lie fed to them to keep a contorted, glass world of peace that in reality did not exist. Bakas.
Hiei, so caught up in his deep thoughts, did not notice that his feet were, from force of habit, carrying him to the detective's old city until he was a few miles from the temple. Might as well go and see if Yukina is still here…but something stopped him in his tracks. It was a familiar, yet changed face.
Hiei stuck to the shadows of the trees and silently observed him. He was downright startled at how much different the oaf appeared…and acted. Counting the time mentally, Hiei assumed that by now the oaf would be around eighteen or nineteen now, as he was a few months older than Yuusuke. He was alone, heading towards the very place where Hiei just seconds earlier had decided to go, but even the way he walked was different. He carried himself with a more mature and confident air. As Kuwabara began ascending the steps to Genkai's temple, Hiei followed him through the trees, in such a daze that he failed to notice the alarming wards the old bat had placed until it was too late.

It had been a long day at work, and Kazuma was dead tired. He was still faintly amused by the downright shock of the disgruntled little fire demon following him at this very moment. Hiei hadn't seen him, or anyone else in the old gang, for that matter, in nearly four years, so he supposed the youkai should be surprised. I suppose I would be surprised too if our roles were reversed. The years no doubt have changed me. What I am surprised about is that he hasn't noticed how much my power has grown. Kazuma thought. He assumed that Hiei, of all people would have noticed the thin barrier tracing the outskirts of the city that would alert him to the presence, rank, and intentions of any demon that passes it, and judges them accordingly. If instead if Hiei it had been, for example a lower D-rank demon simply crawling in to wreak havoc, the barrier would have transported him far away into the mountains and wiped away his memory of why he was in Ningenkai in the first place. Another thing that Kazuma found amusing was that fact that Hiei was about to get shocked by wards in say…4 seconds if he didn't-
A loud zap, followed by a grunt of pain then a thud a few seconds later. Kazuma didn't have to turn around to know what happened. He stopped climbing the stairs, turned and chuckled at the little demon picking himself off the ground with a muffled curse. "What's wrong Hiei? You seemed to be a bit zoned out." He teased.
"Hn."
"It's nice to see you too." He replied sarcastically with a roll of his eyes. That's Hiei all right: when in doubt, pull out the wordless grunting response. Without thinking of it too much, Hiei silently fell into step beside Kuwabara as they headed up the last leg of the stairs.
"You look….different." Hiei said suddenly.
Kazuma chuckled again. "Oh, so am I attractive to you now?"
Hiei's slight blush and annoyed glare gave him his answer, but also warned him to drop the matter for now. As the human observed his demon friend, he saw that, unlike him, the years changed him very little. As demons, after reaching a certain point in their lives, cease to age, this was little to speak of. The only thing that seemed to change on Hiei's catlike face was his eyes, which appeared to be a little darker and…older. He lazily wondered what Hiei had done in the past three and a half years, and what led him back to Ningenkai. He was about to voice his thought into a question when Yukina ran out of the temple with a brightest smile on her face.
"Hello, Kazuma! Oh, and Hiei-san too! It's been so long!"
With that, she pulled Hiei into a rather awkward hug, well…at least for him, anyway. She then turned her affections to Kuwabara, who lightly wrapped an arm around her and planted a light kiss on her forehead before walking inside with her, the now very large Puu squawking, obviously happy to see the oaf…and him as well.
"Hiei are you planning to come in sometime today, or are you happy standing there staring into space?" Kazuma called over his shoulder.
It took Hiei a while to respond, the image of the kiss replaying itself in the youkai's mind over and over again. He was expecting this; the oaf had been fawning over his sister since the day he laid eyes on her, so they were most likely in a relationship now, especially since he was sure his sister was more educated in the ways of ningens. That much would be painfully obvious to anyone. Ok, so they're lovers now. Hiei thought.
It didn't quite sink in why that made his stomach churn and his chest coil tightly in pain...or was it jealousy?
His eyes widened, and he stomped that thought down to the deepest confines of his mind.
That's impossible; I can't possibly have any feelings for the baka ningen, I couldn't care less if he has…someone else.
Hiei had yet to figure out why thinking that made his demon heart skip a beat in pain.
