Happily Ever After?

Inuyasha walked down the forest path, thinking of the past few years. So much had happened since the defeat of Naraku. Sango and Miroku had gotten married and now had two little twin girls with another on the way. They all teased Miroku that he would be cursed with girls because of his formerly lecherous ways, but he didn't seem to care. Kohaku had been saved thanks to Kagome and Kaede after Naraku removed the shard from his back. Now he traveled around trying to make peace with all he had done while under Naraku's control by helping others. Shippo was happy to have family again, no matter how much of an odd group they made, and spent his time just being the kid he was.

Kikyo had finally come to terms with her death and had moved on, but only after she apologized to Inuyasha for the pain she had caused him. Sesshomaru was still around somewhere. He and Inuyasha had worked together, unwillingly, to defeat Naraku and were on slightly (very slightly) better terms. Now, he sometimes brought Rin to stay in the village. Inuyasha and Koga still didn't get along, even though Koga had finally accepted that Kagome would only have feelings of friendship toward him. The last Inuyasha had heard of him was that he and Ayame had gotten together. Kaede was still alive and kicking (along with the old flea) and was teaching Kagome to take her place as the village priestess. And as for Kagome and Inuyasha…

Inuyasha caught sight of Kagome. She was working in her herb garden. A smile came on his face as he observed her.

Kagome stood up from working and stretched. Suddenly, a pair of strong arms wrapped themselves around her, making her jump in surprise.

"EEK! Inuyasha! I told you not to do that anymore!" she scolded, although she couldn't stop the smile that spread across her face.

Chuckling, Inuyasha nuzzled his face into the side of her neck.

"How are you feeling today?" he asked as he rubbed the suspicious bump on her stomach.

"I'm… we're just fine," she replied, smiling brightly at him.

"Good," he said, placing a soft kiss on the side of her neck.

"So where have you been?" Kagome asked, turning in his arms to face him.

"Feh. I was teaching the kit how to hunt, like you tricked me into doing."

"I did not trick you! I merely said that it would be your fault if Shippo wasn't able to take care of himself in the future," she said while attempting to look innocent.

"Keh. And you threatened not to give me any more ramen! Don't forget about that!"

Kagome giggled softly. "You love ramen waaaay too much Inuyasha."

"Feh. At least I'm not obsessed with bathing," he retorted, grinning.

"I am not obsessed with bathing!" Kagome exclaimed. Suddenly, Kagome made a small sound of surprise and clutched at her stomach.

"What is it? What's the matter? Are you hurt?" frantically asked Inuyasha, who had become very jumpy when it came to Kagome and her "condition."

"No, I'm okay. I think I just felt the baby kicking!" she said excitedly while giving him one of her best smiles and keeping her hand pressed to her stomach.

"I felt it again! Here…" Kagome reached out to take Inuyasha's hand to place it on her round belly. "Do you feel it?"

There it was. It was just a small movement, but it was there. Their pup was kicking from inside her. Inuyasha returned Kagome's brilliant smile with one of his own, the feeling of utter contentment washing over him.

No, it wasn't exactly the characteristic happily ever after in all the stories Kagome told Shippo. He and Kagome still fought sometimes, and he still got plastered to the ground now and then. But for the first time in his life, he was truly happy, and that was good enough for him
