Chapter 1: Frozen inside
I tried to steady my startled breaths as this revelation occurred to me.
As soon as I realize this, I placed my bare feet on the cold concrete. Shivering at the touch.
The room was still too quiet, all I heard was my own shaky breath as I stood up. I made my way towards the discolored window, but I gasped in a panic. There was so many people outside, it was too much for me to take in all at once.
Am I supposed to be here?
I closed my eyes tightly, trying to stay focused. Taking in slow breaths, with the last exhale I glanced at a rusted, old chair next to the mattress I was laying on which contained; An ashen colored shirt, blue jeans, gray/dusted boots that had buttons, and such long woven gloves that could reach to my shoulders along with an bandana that was black along with a beanie, and scarf that was a worn down baby blue. Next to the clothes was a cargo jacket, hesitantly I picked up the jacket and caught sight of initials on the inner part of the jacket.
Property of A.V.
Who was A.V.? Is that my name?
I shoved away the thought as I caught sight of bandages on my shoulder and calf. I sat on the squeaky mattress and began to peel away the bandages, I gasped in surprise of what I saw.
There was three slash marks on both my shoulder, and calf, my olive toned skin looked reddened from the scars that were embedded into my skin. Though the scars looked healed. I threw the bandages to the side and I quickly dressed in the clothing that was on the rusted chair.
Theories came to me; The people here, did they give me those scars? Were they the ones who took my memories away?
I needed to stop questioning myself. I needed to get out of here, like right now. My footsteps rushed through the room in a panic, I grabbed a backpack that was labeled SUPPLIES. I needed to check what was the contents in the bag first; Flashlight, rope, medicine, bandages, matches, and ziplocks of food with water cantene's. No knife of course, but I snatched a pocket knife that was left under the chair.
I threw the backpack over my shoulder, just as I did that metal doors opened. I felt myself freeze, feeling the flutters in my heart like hummingbirds as I turned slowly. Ready to run which I did and I slammed the person out of the way.
"What the hell?! Lena!" The person called out, it sounded like a woman.
That must be my name then? Lena, unless of course the woman was calling out to someone else to try and catch me.
My instincts told me to jump out the window. I was hesitant at first, but I heard footsteps come back as I looked to the side; The woman had such light tanned skin, ebony hair that was tied in a loose braid, and hazel eyes. She looked so oddly familiar, but I didn't dwell upon it as I pulled myself onto the ledge and jumped out quickly, grabbing hold a rusted metal ladder and jumped across the rooftops.
Meanwhile, Hope's POV~
What in hell is her problem? I thought, why would Lena be acting like this? In fact why would she shove me out of the way, and jump out of a window in fear? I quickly shoved my hand into my pocket and contacted Malcom on one of the walkie-talkie's we found yesterday.
"Malcolm, we have a problem!" I announced as I was already running and making my way down the stairs, and avoiding people that I didn't want to shove into.
"What is it" His voice said through the walkie-talkie, and I ran out the door "It's Lena! She ran off" His voice was quiet for a moment, but I finally heard him "What do you mean she ran off? Lena's awake?"
"Yes, but for some god damned reason, she ran off" I panted slightly as I stopped in my pace and tried to steady my heavy breathing "I'm trying to catch her, but I lost track of her" I muttered.
"Alright I'll have security do a check-up through out the colony, maybe she got startled by something. Though we'll make sure that we find her" I nodded slightly as I shoved the object back into my pocket, and I wandered around the Colony. Trying to at least think of one place that Lena would be headed, it doesn't make sense at all of why she would be acting like this.
Meanwhile, Lena's POV~
I Slid down a fire escape, and peaked from behind a wall as I saw many people. The city looked like it would be deserted, but was occupied by so many people. It was a society of some sort. I bit my lip eagerly, but I ran down the street anyways. Bumping my way into people as they gave me yells of annoyance.
I wondered of how I had such good stamina to be running this long. In my eyesight was a bridge, my mind told me the Golden Gate Bridge for whatever odd reason. I dashed quickly through the what looked like an entrance that read.
BORDER CLOSED-TAKE CAUTION OF THE VIRUS
The entrance also showed steps of the virus it was talking about. Though the entrance was rusted, of no years of touch up. I paid no attention though as I rushed out through the opening.
"Hey! You're not authorized to go out there!" A voice yelled as the person grabbed hold of my arm and turned me, but his deep blue eyes widened. It was a male, with pushed back charcoal black hair, and light skin.
I shoved him out of the way and sped off again across the bridge, I heard others yell to get my attention, for me to come back. I ignored their calls as I continued running. I felt my lungs wanting to give out as my breathing became heavy, my legs began to become sore as my knee's wobbled slightly. Before I knew it I was already across the bridge, I gasped as I sank down to my knee's trying to catch my breath. I pulled out the canteen that I hooked to my belt, and took a big swig of water.
I needed to keep going, I ignored my knee's plea for me to stop. Looking ahead was a prison of such tall tree's, I licked my cracked lips, the cold wind blew through my face and my dry eyes burned. Something was telling me to go here, so I did.
Walking slowly, my feet make crunching sounds as my shoes hit the dirt. I clenched my fists tightly as I paced my walking and made my way into the tree's, I wasn't prepared for what the night was going to bring me.
Later, Hope's POV~
"Let me get this straight" I began as I rubbed my temple annoyed, "You just let her run off?".
Tanner sighed annoyed "I didn't know yet that we had to keep on lookout for someone who is a runaway right now" I claimed as he crossed his arms over his chest, but he relaxed slightly "Right after she shoved me, Lena ran down the bridge. She's headed to the Redwoods".
I cocked an eyebrow, confused actually "Well then we should go after her" Alexander stated, and Julia nodded "He's right, maybe Lena got panicked by something. That probably caused her to run off just like that".
"There was a look in her eyes..." Tanner started "A look I didn't recognize, as if it was blank, but it was full of fear like she wanted to get away from here".
"Could she probably have, no wait that's stupid to think that" Ellie began, and I looked at her firmly "Ellie what are you getting at?" Ellie sighed as she turned to me "Perhaps...I have seen this before, when I was in medical school. We went to an hospital, there was one girl I saw she seemed normal, but was in a coma. Though she finally woke up, she seemed confused, scared. The girl became aggressive and tried to escape the hospital".
"What does that have to do with Lena" Malcolm asked, and Ellie looked at him "Lena might have Amnesia, I mean the way she hit her head..." Ellie trailed off, and I was stricken, no way Lena could have Amnesia, but it seemed to make sense of how she acted. I felt so stupid for not realizing it sooner.
"Alright" I began "We need to get going, knowing what kind of trouble Lena could possibly get into".
Later, Lena's POV~
Nerves prickled my skin as I made my way through the snow. I was soaked from head to toe, and my blood felt like it was going to freeze at any moment. The clothing wasn't all that helpful. I didn't even know what I was looking for in this buried madness of a forest.
I then heard slow movement as I looked behind and shined my flashlight since the sun died out. The figure moved away quickly and my eyes widened as I croaked out "Hello?" My voice sounded smooth and crystalline like, but sounded sore as well. My flashlight guided me to the fresh footprints of the snow, in the darkness with the light there was pellets of snowflakes falling rapidly through the air, making my eyes irritated from the harsh weather and the bitter cold.
I shined my flashlight onto the figure and was taken back slightly by surprised.
It was a bonobo, my instincts told me not to trust it, but it seemed so frightened and cautious; The ape had weathered, darkened fur. His skin was as black as the dark oak tree's, and was covered was scars, but his left eye had a scar across his face, and was a milky white awhile his right was such a bright green. The ape crouched down in fear at the sight of me, but was frozen as well like a deer in headlights. He limped away in a quick pace, making small 'imp' sounds in pain.
I was in shock actually, what the hell is an ape doing all the way in this kind of environment?
"Hey wait!" I called out to him, though my foot got hold of something as I slammed into it hard. It smelled like rot as I scrunched up my nose in disgust, I opened my eyes.
That was when the sound of terror tore through my throat.
Stay tuned for chapter 2!
