Eggman awoke.

Noticing his blue spectacles were not on his person, he panicked. The doctor sat up on the linen bed and spotted them on the beside table. He hurriedly snatched them up and places them on the bridge of his nose. To his relief, they switched on instantly, unbroken.

...But where was he?

Eggman jumped up, warily observing his surroundings. Small room. Wooden. Lit by a little lamp on the beside table. The bed up against the wall, behind the bedside was a window with the blinds shut. A humble closet across the bed. And a door. A bedroom.

Someone knocked on the door.

"Who's there?" Eggman asked warily, his spectacles already beginning to X-ray the door. Unfortunately that required too much power, so he stopped that futile attempt.

"O-Oh! You are awake!" A woman's voice could be heard on the other end. "I-I um, I just prepared some chicken soup for when you woke up, since you might be hungry". Eggman's stomach grumbled in agreement, much to his dismay.

"And how can I trust you?" Eggman replied, striding closer to the door. His footsteps sounded loudly on the floor, and the woman stood back softly in fright.

"I-I... you.. don't, actually, but I.. did pull you out of the rubble of your.. ship? I'm, I'm sorry, I..." She trailed off and Eggman heard sniffles through the door. Slowly he opened it to see a middle aged woman tearing up, her hands shaking a little. He stepped forward and held her hands to keep the tray steady with the soup and glass of water on it.

"It's, erm," Eggman did not really know how to respond. He was used to ordering around his robots, but it had been a long time since he had ever had a proper interaction with a human like this. "It's alright, let's just go inside".

"If that works for you, I-I suppose.." The woman smiled a little and Eggman took the tray from her hands, leading the way into the room. He sat down on the bed, and she next to him. Awkward silence hung in the air, and Eggman took the initiative to begin eating. "O-Oh! I'm so sorry, um, my name is Mary.."

"My name is Dr Eggman," Eggman stated matter of factly, before softening up when he noted her nervousness. "but erm, 'Doctor' is fine". Eggman slowly ate the soup, and she watched him with a small smile.

"How did you come to.. land near our town?" The woman asked him once he had reached halfway through the bowl.

"Eh?" Eggman stopped, a spoon hung in the air. "Oh, uh, that, erm.." The doctor sighed, sipping the spoon. "Just another defeat with Sonic". He grumbled, "That thorn in my side, that hedgehog".

"What happened?"

"It's none of your business!" Eggman turned away a little, accidentally sloshing the soup in the bowl. Some spilled on the bed.

"O-Oh! Oh please, it is of no concern!" Mary grabbed some tissues from within a drawer in the bedside table, and laid them down on the linen. Eggman frowned and stared down at his bowl, cursing himself slightly. "It's alright, Doctor, this is nothing".

"No, I, I'm s-" Eggman struggled to get the words out. "S... s-sorry. There, I said it" The woman looked back down to the tissues she was pressing to the bed with her hands, avoiding his gaze. He sighed. "The story is still up if you would like it".

"Really?" Mary looked up to him, a small twinkle in her eyes. "I'd love to hear it". A little pleased he could make her happy again, Eggman adjusted his position and cleared his throat.

"Now, I have an arch nemesis named Sonic..."
