As soon as she finishes "Take My Breath Away" and gets Quinn situated back in her wheelchair, Santana is back in Brittany's arms. With Quinn on one arm and a microphone in her other hand, she'd only been able to smile her only-for-Brittany smile and wink when Brittany signed "I Love You" to her. She leans in, hands around Brittany's waist, and says, "I love you too. SO much."
Several upbeat songs are next, followed by Puck running through an impromptu but not too bad rendition of "Stairway to Heaven" (an odd song to dance to, given that it's a slow song that turns fast). A couple more fast songs and then Mr. Schuster steps up to the microphone—it's going to be the last song of the night, the last song of this prom, and he wanted his glee kids to all be able to dance for this one. He reminds all present to support the glee club and then the first notes of the song begin. It's slow, so Santana steps in close to Brittany, putting her arms around her neck and feeling Brittany hold her tight on the back of her dress. It takes a second to recognize the song but when she does, her heart expands again, like it does over and over again with Brittany.
"Brittany…"
"I cheated," Brittany responds smugly. "I knew what you'd be wearing tonight so I made them play this song last. You know, to close out this totally awesome night with my totally hot and awesome and amazing girlfriend."
As Mr Schu launches into "Lady in Red", Santana holds Brittany even tighter, nuzzling her face into her neck. Last year, her heart had been hurting so very, very much at the prom. So much of it had been spent catching glimpses of Brittany dancing, and wanting so, so badly to be with her, to be the one she was slow-dancing with, to have those beautiful blue eyes trained on her. A couple of months after they started dating for real, when so much of the tension in her life had dissipated and her heart felt light all the time and she just basked in the glory of finally being with Brittany, it occurred to her that this meant they would be able to go to prom together. There were a lot of things Santana dreamed about regarding Brittany, many of them much, much bigger than the prom (and much further down the road) but she couldn't help herself. She had day-dreamed over and over again about how amazing it was going to be, being Brittany's date to the Senior Prom and Brittany being hers, going together as a couple, completely, totally, and utterly in love with each other.
Dancing in Brittany's arms now, listening to the song that the love of her life specifically chose for her…the reality of it all is a billion times better than anything she could have imagined.
