Now that Peeta had been hijacked, he was different. He had told Katniss that he didn't trust himself not to hurt her. He gave her the freedom to be with Gale, and as much as Katniss cared for Gale, he wouldn't be Peeta, now or ever.

Peeta was in every thought. She was constantly comparing whatever Gale did with what Peeta would do.

Katniss was still haunted by nightmares, and the only person who could protect her from them was Peeta.

Peeta's eyes had once gazed on her in love and unwavering devotion. Now if he managed to focus on her through the pain of his rehabilitation, it was with loathing and hatred.

I was disgusted with myself
She felt like she was betraying Peeta every moment she spent with Gale. She knew that on some level, Gale knew that he was a replacement for Peeta.

The first time she let Peeta go was in the arena when she and Johanna had left with the coil. The second time was when she let him go to be with Gale, according to Peeta's wishes.

Katniss almost laughed at the absurdity of the fact that she had been labeled the "girl on fire," and not only had she gotten burned, she had in turn burned the "boy with the bread."

Someone knocked at her door. Katniss opened it, and there stood Peeta. He didn't have to say anything. He just wrapped his arms around Katniss in a welcome embrace.
She knew that no matter what happened, Peeta would fight for her, just like he always had.
