Prologue

Although it wasn't known for weeks, the trial of the reploid known as "granite" would change the world. The case was a simple one. Granite had been charged with murder. He had of course, not done anything of the sort. He was quite the pacifist and was not a reploid who would even process the thought of hurting someone, human or reploid. The true reason the trial was so vastly important in history was that although the police had so many other leads, and many other methods of gathering evidence that may have been usable in defending Granite, they automatically assumed that he was a flawed, mindless robot that had attacked its creators. The obvious evidence was purposely "overlooked", as the human police ignored everything but evidence that would be used to prosecute Granite. In the end, his control chip was incinerated to insure his death. A few reploids discovered the truth behind the trial and brought it to national attention immediately. Reploid riots were held along with human riots, and the tension continued to build. The pure hatred of reploids from some groups of humans was still not enough to cause the reploids to resort to violence. That changed immediately when anti-reploid groups started to capture and destroy reploids. In the instance that made the news, blood was spilled, human blood. A group a reploids decided to fight back. This spawned the new generation of Mavericks. They quickly formed a new organization that fought in the name of repression. The human military could provide little resistance, and the revolting reploids were unstoppable. The remaining reploids formed the foundation for the rebirth of the Maverick Hunter HQ. They rebuilt the powerful fortress and held back the resistance. The resistance started teaching their ways to young reploids, causing truly ruthless Mavericks to take over. At the end of the last sigma war, when the maverick virus was wiped out, Zero and X had themselves deactivated in secret locations. There are a few humans who know of their relative location and how to reactivate them, but there is no guarantee that they will even have the ability to fight the new resistance. They are, after all, only legends.
