Glimmer was scared. Well, more like frightened out of her mind. Sure, she had been training years for this to happen. But she just didn't expect it to be this soon. She wasn't even 18 yet. Why would they chose her to volunteer?

A single tear fell down her cheek, she was finally giving in to her fear. She could never do this at home. Her father would simply tell her to suck it up or laugh at her, and her mother would just stay out of it. There was nowhere she could go – except for here of course. The meadow was the only place she could get away from everyone and everything. For the most part, it helped her to clear her mind and shed every tear she was forced to hold back.

The second tear came, followed by dozens more. She could already picture the horrific bloodbath in her mind. There was no doubt in her mind that she would be the first to die.

"Glim?"

She knew that voice, the only voice that could soothe her and tell her that everything was okay. But this time, nothing was okay. She would die, she knew that, but she also knew he would be the one to go home. He would move on from her, find a stronger and much more emotionally stable girl to be his. He would forget all about her the second he came back to District 1.

"Glimmer, look at me."

His voice was much closer now. She could feel his warm breath on the back of her neck, soon followed by his arms snaking around her waist. That was all she needed to not only make her feel better, but make her feel worse. It hurt her to think this would be the last moment they would share before they got on the train to the Capitol. Not too long after that, she would never be able to see him again. And that broke her heart. He was really all that she had.

Finally, she turned around to face him. Looking up into his eyes, she saw the most loving, sympathetic gaze she had ever seen him give her. And if possible, he too looked as if he was going to be in tears. He was stronger than she was, though. He could fight them back.

"I won't let you die. I'll do anything to keep you alive, no matter what it takes." Marvel's thumb brushed against the same cheek where her first tear fell. The look in his eyes held the promise and truth in every word he had just spoken to her. After planting a long, but tender kiss on her lips, he told her one last thing.

"I promise you, Glimmer."
