Kevin sauntered over to where his motorcycle was parked in the school's student parking lot. He furrowed his brow as he swung a leg over the bike, adjusting his backpack and subconsciously searching the parking lot for that familiar black and white beanie. It had become a routine. Class was dismissed, Kevin packed up, discreetly sneaked a glance at Double Dee at his locker, walked out to his motorcycle, saw Double Dee coming out of the doors, and then he rode home where he may or may not catch a glimpse of the dork coming home. He swallowed tightly as Double Dee walked out the doors and traipsed down the stone steps of Peach Creek High School.
He rolled his eyes when Eddy came up behind him and swung an arm around Edd's shoulders. Stupid dork. Always getting in the way. Eddy was talking animatedly about something, and Double Dee was laughing into his hands. Kevin clenched his jaw and narrowed his eyes. What was the short dweeb saying? Kevin would never understand why Double Dee hung out with Eddy. After the incident with Eddy's brother in junior high, the cul-de-sac had become more of a close-knit group, but Eddy still grated on Kevin's nerves. The shorter dork left Double Dee's side to catch up to Ed who was waiting patiently at the foot of the steps with a goofy grin plastered on his face.
The redhead started his motorcycle and thunderously revved it. He was just about to pick up his feet and take off when suddenly a tall, tan, muscular guy swaggered up to Double Dee and started a conversation with him. Kevin raised an eyebrow, running through a list of Double Dee's friends in his mind. He'd never seen Edd talk to this guy before. He recognized him from a class he'd had with him before. What was the guy's name? Mark? Matt? Pretty sure it was Matt or something like that. What was he doing talking to Double Dee?
The tall teen leaned in and said something to Edd, who turned a brilliant shade of red but smiled all the same. Jealousy and anger flared in the pit of Kevin's stomach as he watched the scene unfold before him. He gazed at the pair, slack-jawed, as the taller teen shamelessly flirted with Double Dee. What the fuck?! Kevin's low growl could not be heard over the roar of his motorcycle, but he took off before he could witness anything else.
The ride home was not relaxing like it normally was. In fact, by the time Kevin pulled into his driveway, his anger had only grown. He kicked the kickstand, not noticing as his bike wobbled precariously before settling down once more. He paced around the garage for a minute, trying to understand his feelings. He quickly realized that it didn't take a genius to figure out why he felt this way.
"Fuck," he said, sliding his hand down his face. "I've got it bad. For Double Dork."
Trembling, he trudged up the steps and into his house, shutting the door with a quiet click. He leaned against the door and slid down, holding his head in his hands. Minutes ticked by, and all Kevin could do was stare blankly at the floor. How could this have happened? When did this happen? He had always been straight. Always. What had changed?
He plopped down on the couch, absent-mindedly tossing the remote control from hand to hand, back and forth. He sighed, hanging his head down to look at his shoes. He could live with being bisexual or gay or whatever, but did it have to be Double Dee?! He laid back and covered his face with one arm, letting the other hang off the couch. He dropped the remote, not caring about anything at the moment. He tried to keep his mind blank - to forget about everything for just a minute - but he heard an engine rev as a car sped by his house. He raised an eyebrow. No one he knew drove a car that sounded like that. And no one else in the cul-de-sac drove like a dick except for himself.
Kevin sat up and tip-toed to the window, lifting the blinds just enough to see out of. He squinted, peering out from his hiding spot. A flashy car had pulled into Double Dee's driveway. Any other time, Kevin would have admired the electric blue Mustang, but right now, he was suspicious. He watched impatiently, hardly daring to breathe. Both the driver and passenger doors opened, and Double Dee was the first thing Kevin saw. His heart pounded in his chest as he looked over to see who his companion was. A heartbeat of silence. And then everything went to hell.
Kevin swore loudly as he watched Matt get out of the car and walk up the steps to Double Dee's house. Edd pulled his keys from his bag and unlocked the front door, letting himself and Matt inside. Kevin couldn't believe his eyes. He had never seen this guy before today, and suddenly he was everywhere, practically glued to Double Dee's side from the moment school let out. What the fuck?! The redhead was seething with anger and jealousy. He closed the blinds, kicking the remote across the room, not caring if he shattered anything. His parents were out of town for the week, visiting his great-grandmother in the hospital a few hours away. Kevin had told them that he couldn't miss any more school if he wanted to graduate, so they had reluctantly let him stay home alone. He was eighteen. He could handle himself. Or so he had thought. Now he was struggling to not go over to the dork's house and beat the living shit out of Matt.
He slammed his bedroom door behind him and threw himself down on the bed. His brain was a hive of activity, buzzing with thoughts of jealousy, want, and regret for not having realized his feelings sooner. He wondered for a moment whether or not he wanted Double Dee, or if he was just jealous that someone else was paying attention to the dork. The thought of Matt crossing his mind was enough to put a scowl on his face.
"I'll be damned if I lose Double Dweeb to someone like Matt before I've even had a chance." If he was going to win Double Dee over, he was going to need some help. He pondered his options for a moment, grabbed his phone, and sent a text. There. Just like that, a plan was in motion.
"Tell me again, Shovel Chin, why we should help you?" Eddy sneered, raising an eyebrow as he leaned against Kevin's door frame. Ed just stood there, smiling blankly as usual.
Kevin stood on threshold, arms crossed as he fought with himself internally, torn between telling the dork to fuck off and telling him he needed his help. He wondered for a moment if he really needed to go through with this. Plenty of people had crushes they would never act on. He could just pretend nothing was different, go back to being the old Kevin, and move on with his life. He sighed. Except he couldn't go back to being the old Kevin. The old Kevin would never have seethed with hatred and jealousy over someone else giving Double Dee attention. No, he at the very least needed to see where this could go.
"You know that guy that was hanging around Double Dee yesterday?" Kevin ventured carefully, eyeing Eddy's reactions carefully. Eddy's face turned sour and the corners of his mouth pulled down into a miniature frown.
"Yeah, Matt. I hate that guy. Thinks he's the shit," he pulled a face, rolling his eyes.
"He thinks he's gravy, Eddy, but he's just a piece of untoasted bread," Ed said mystically, shaking his head sadly. Eddy shot his friend a puzzled look before continuing.
"What about him anyway? What's he got to do with anything?" inquired Eddy, smirking and raising an eyebrow.
Kevin's palms were sweaty, and he was struggling to keep his cool. This was harder than he had thought it would be. "I don't like him. I think he's using Double Dee. I don't think he's interested in him. He's just screwing with him to get something out of it!" Kevin exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air.
Slowly, suspicious understanding crept across Eddy's features as he slowly asked. "Okay. So me and Ed will take care of it. What do you want, Shovel Chin?"
Kevin had never wanted to sock Eddy in the face more than he did in that moment. The dork knew exactly what he was getting at, but he wanted him to say it. Freaking Eddy.
"I want your help winning Double Dee over," Kevin muttered under his breath, looking at the ground.
Eddy feigned hearing loss as he cupped a hand to his ear and leaned forward. "Sorry, didn't catch that. What was that, Kev?" Eddy smiled maliciously.
"I said help me win over Double Dee!" Kevin yelled. Some crows nearby flew off of the power lines, disappearing from sight.
Much to Kevin's dismay, Eddy doubled over in a fit of uncontrollable laughter. The taller teen tried to harness his anger but to no avail. He grabbed Eddy by the collar of his shirt and raised him to eye level with himself.
"You'd better not tell anyone, dork," Kevin warned, letting the unsaid threat hang in the air ominously.
Eddy scowled, pushing Kevin away from him.
"Hey, remember when you found out my middle name? And you promised you wouldn't tell? Made me do a whole bunch of ridiculous and embarrassing stuff, saying that you wouldn't tell if I did those things? And you still told everyone in the cul-de-sac? Yeah, fuck off," Eddy finished heatedly.
Kevin blinked, feeling a rush of cold fear and worry wash over him. The dork was gonna spill everything to Double Dee! As Eddy turned to leave with Ed in tow, Kevin blurted out the only thing he could think of to stop him.
"I'll pay you!"
Eddy stopped in his tracks and turned on his heels, grinning from ear to ear.
"It's gonna cost ya big time," he said, rubbing his hands together greedily.
Kevin rolled his eyes and rubbed the back of his neck. "How much we talkin', dork?"
"A hundred dollars to help with this plan of yours," Eddy bargained.
"What?! No way! I'll give you thirty," Kevin countered, narrowing his eyes.
"Eighty!"
Kevin scoffed. "Fifty bucks. Take it or leave it."
"Deal," Eddy said, a gleam in his eye. "Shake on it."
Eddy spit in his hand, and Kevin spit in his own. They clapped their hands together with a squelch. The plan was on.
