AN: I've been into the Voltron Legendary Defender show for over a year now so I decided to write a fanfic about it. This one centers around Shiro's sister and my OC, Eirian and her quest to save her brother upon hearing the news of what happened to the Kerberos crew. I hope you peeps enjoy!
Chapter 1: Breaking News
Disclaimer: I own nothing except my OC.
"All three members of the Kerberos mission are presumed dead after a pilot error caused the ship to crash. While search teams have been dispatched, their efforts have been proven futile as no sign from the pilot nor the two scientists who were with him have been discovered. Everyone return to your quadrant, check in with your station supervisor and stay inside. I repeat-"
Eirian froze at the sound of the news report, the rest of the report nothing but white noise that went ignored. Time seemed to stand still as her helmet slowly slipped from her fingers and landed on the floor with a soft thud. Her heart stopping, she finally regained the use of her motor skills as she rushed towards the communicator clutching it tightly in her grasp hoping she had heard wrong. However as the announcement repeated itself, confirming the terrible disaster that had befallen the Kerberos crew, Eirian let the device slip from her grasp as well as she caved in on herself, hugging her frame tightly as the tears heavily poured from her eyes. The reason for her distress was that her brother, Takashi Shirogane, was the pilot responsible for the Kerberos mission. The mission whose entire crew had just been reported as dead.
Slowly regaining her composure, Eirian sat up and leaned against her bed. The room she had been assigned on the Triton base was small and compact, with barely enough space on the floor for her to lay in the fetal position, let alone stretch out. There wasn't even a window, but considering she was in the vast vacuum of space where no oxygen was present she quickly got over that minor detail. Composing herself, she frowned as her brain began to clear as its gears began to turn. There was absolutely no way her brother, the best pilot in his class, had crashed the ship he and his team was on. And if he had, he would have made sure everyone escaped before the ship crashed. It was unlike Shiro and went against everything Eirian knew about him.
Angrily wiping her tears away, Eirian stood up. Shoving her helmet back on her head, she slung her bag over her shoulder before making her way to her ship. Being stationed on Triton, a moon of Neptune, she was relatively close to Pluto's moon, Kerberos, where Shiro and the others had last been spotted. If the Garrison was going to claim her brother was dead, she wanted to see it for herself, screw the lockdown and anyone who told her to stay inside.
Not bothering to tell anyone where she was going, or that she was, in fact, leaving the base entirely, Eirian hopped into a small exploration speeder before taking off towards Kerberos. Despite knowing that there was no way the members of the Kerberos mission had actually crashed, Eirian was nervous about what she may find when she arrived on the moon. Her fingers tightly clutching the controls to the point where her knuckles were turning white, Eirian willed the ship to fly faster, pushing the controls as far as they would go in her impatience.
Using the hours of free time she had between her take off and her arrival on Kerberos, Eirian laughed as she imagined what she would say to Shiro when she found him. He would probably find it hilarious that people would believe it feasibly possible that he, Shiro, had crashed a ship. Like Eirian, Shiro had graduated from the Garrison at the top of his class, setting several new course records during his time there in regards to both speed and accuracy. It was no wonder he had been assigned to the Kerberos mission, the furthest any team, from the Garrison or otherwise, had trekked so far. Eirian was on Triton when she had found out from Shiro where he was going. Generally, communication between those in space and those on Earth was frowned upon but for them, an exception had been made. And it was an exception was well spent. The brother and sister had always dreamed about going into space together, of discovering new planets and exploring the areas where no human had gone before. And just when it seemed like that dream was going to become a reality, they found themselves in this mess.
"Don't worry, Shiro," Eirian murmured to herself, "I'm going to find you and prove everyone wrong. I know you're out there."
She knew if she just kept talking to herself, whether it be about fond memories or future escapades, it would be a good enough distraction from the thoughts she wanted to keep at bay. The thoughts that the report was true. That Shiro and his teammates were dead. There was no reason for the Garrison to lie about such an event, no reason for a cover story to be necessary for this situation. Honestly, there was no reason for Eirian to go through with this over than simply because she had to see for herself that her brother was not coming back to Earth. She had to see for herself what had happened, because only then would she truly be able to silence the voice in the back of her head that was telling her otherwise.
As she approached Kerberos, she stopped her ship and began to run an analysis. The moon itself was relatively small, with only a 7.5-mile diameter at its widest point, therefore the scanner would make short work of it. If there was any organic matter, alive or dead, it would register, whether it be a trace element or a body. However, the scan registered nothing. According to its readings, Kerberos was like its surrounding moons and asteroids; a lifeless rock floating through space without having ever received any form of human interaction.
Deciding to go in for a closer look, Eirian landed the ship on the moon, secured her helmet, and made her way onto the surface. As her body readjusted to the severe lack of gravity, she began to explore the base. It wasn't long before she came across the drill the trio had been using to take samples from the moon. But apart from the drill, the rest of the equipment was gone, as were any sign of human activity. There were no footprints or indication that the ground had been trodden upon, there was no loose rubble or pieces of debris, nor was there any sign of where samples had been drawn from the moon's lower levels. There was no sign of survivors, either.
"This doesn't make any sense! They couldn't have just vanished into thin air! If they crashed, there should be debris floating around or some kind of sign that there were people here." Eirian frustratedly murmurs to herself as she walks over to the drill. "Why are you the only thing out here?"
As she lays her hand against the drill, a shiver ran up her body that was unrelated to her being in the frozen recesses of space. Her space suit was supposed to keep her warm, and it was not malfunctioning. As the shiver turned into a sharp pull, completely reorienting her, Eirian looked up to see another ship hovering over her. This one was unlike any ship she had ever seen before. It certainly wasn't from the Garrison, let alone Earth. While it was clunky and lacked an aerodynamic appeal, it was still highly advanced. The tractor beam that was currently reeling her in was an excellent indication of just how advanced this technological marvel was given that on Earth, tractor beams were simply hypothetical construction from science fiction movies. Unlike the movies, the situation she currently found herself in was very, very real.
Too late to jump out of the way or try to pull herself out of its reach given she was already several yards in the air, Eirian had no other choice than to let herself be pulled into the ship, hoping that whoever, or whatever, would either know where her brother was, or at the very least not eat her.
