friends aren't always people
He looked one last time at the yard in which he left his friends behind.
The happy smiles carefully painted upon all the varnished faces.
He needed this, he convinced himself.
To start fresh.
Leave his past behind.
And so he did.
With the gear shift in reverse and a glance in his rearview mirror, he was off.
And he drove.
He drove miles and miles with only his thoughts and f.m. radio to keep him company.
The occasional call from mom and sis, just to make sure he was wearing his seatbelt.
Eyes constantly flickering to that empty cardboard box.
He signaled as he turned into the campus parking lot for the first, but not last time.
The campus was large, the people unwelcoming.
It's okay, he convinced himself.
I'll make new friends.
Alone, he walked to the student center, full of hope and insecurities.
He received his dorm room keys and that infamous white, campus map.
Three wrong turns later, he found his dorm.
He hoped for the best as he strode down the empty corridors.
He fished the over-used keys from his pocket, and opened the door.
He inspected the paint chipped white walls, and the metal framed bed.
The single trash can, and a too small closet.
The room, devoid of character.
For the first time, longing for home.
So he plopped down on the bed with a sigh, and gazed around the empty, white room.
And he imagined walls of sky blue, adorned with puffy white clouds.
And endless shelves of toys, encircling the room.
A long forgotten etch-a-sketch, thrown carelessly upon the desk.
Random potato-head pieces strewn across the floor.
He nodded a curt thank you to the forest green dinosaur, who so tirelessly protected his chambers.
He clutched the dusty gray pillow, now covered in spaceships belonging to Star Command.
He felt the warmth of his cowboy hat, sitting atop his head, and touched his hand to where his badge was pinned with pride.
Slowly, he raised his boot clad foot up to his lap, turned the sole to his face and smiled.
Andy missed his friends.
a/n: lol, hi!
thanks for reading! leave me your thoughts!
