You had to rush to the bank. A last minute thing so you asked Ste to keep an eye on the deli for a little while. He said no at first but you insisted it had to be him. He knows how everything works. And after all he owes you, doesn't him?. You are practically running back now. When you walk in, Ste's already putting his jacket on. He wasn't even going to wait for you to get back. Things between you two have been better -easier- lately and you're already here so you don't push it.
You open up the door and find Maxine in there, too. She looks startled. Almost offended.
"You have no idea what it's really like, right?" Ste's practically shouting at her. His face's hard.
You feel like you're interrupting so you just rush past them and get behind the counter, looking for your apron.
"Makes you feel good, innit?" Ste goes on. Quieter now. "Seems easy. You feel you can do anything. You do stupid things but you don't care. But after a while, believe me, you can't control it anymore. The better it feels, the worst it hurts. Until you'd rather die than live without it… I mean it, Max. It's dangerous. Destroys everything it touches. Stay away". He closes the door behind him. Doesn't say goodbye.
You finish tying your apron behind your back. "What were you two on about?" you ask, with a smirk. Who knows what kind of business is Ste up for these days. You don't even want to know. "Cocaine?" You're joking. Only you're not.
She doesn't answer straight away so you turn around to ask notice her gaze following Ste's trail through the window.
"Love." she says.
And you know it shouldn't but somehow it's the only thing that makes sense.
