A/N: Just a quick little thing I decided to write up in between updating for "Cherry on Top". But, don't worry, I plan to keep on schedule and update that shortly. Just thought you guys might like something to laugh at for a change.
Disclaimer: No matter how many times I throw that penny into the fountain, I will never own Death Note. I do, however, claim ownership of the cupcake. 10/10, best character.
Frosting
It had been just another ordinary day at the headquarters. L had been happily plowing away at some sweets, Light had been going through the previous reports, and Matsuda was busy bringing back coffee for the other, much more weary investigators. Mr... Yagami thanked Matsuda's thoughtful efforts, but that was the only word spoken as the warm drinks were passed around. Silence returned to the building as the men returned to their work, but of course it couldn't last long.
The sound of a fork abruptly clanking down against an empty plate rang throughout the investigators' ears, followed shortly by a quiet and blatantly regretful "oh". Everyone's heads spun around to face a sad looking L, who was eyeing the place where his cake had once been with a sorrowful look in his typically emotionless eyes. Watari sighed lightly and backed out of the room, most likely going to fetch the detective another slice.
"What's the matter, Ryuzaki?" Matsuda foolishly inquired, his brows furrowed in thought. "Is it something about the case?" Both Light and the world's greatest detective turned around to stare at the young man, who immediately looked to his feet. He, in all honesty, could not seem to figure out why they were staring him down in such a manner, but he thought it better than to open his mouth. In an almost disappointed way, L swivel his chair slowly back around and resumed scrolling through the computer's files. Light, however, was not as used to these kinds of questions as L was.
"Really, Matsuda?" he began, tugging slightly at the irritating handcuffs as he stepped towards where Matsuda was sitting. "It's quite obvious. He's run out of his immediate sugar supply. Although maybe it's for the best. Perhaps the desire to receive more sweets will push him to actually advance the case rather than cling on to one single suspect!" His shouting earned a glare from the detective, who eyed him suspiciously.
Matsuda, failing to sense the tension throughout the building, shook his head. "I don't get it," he explained, watching as Watari handed L a bigger-than-normal cupcake. "What good do cakes do, anyways?" L's attention was dragged back towards him, and Light continued to look blankly between the two men. The other investigators had already returned to their work, as obviously this wasn't anything new.
"Well, for one thing, the sugar in cakes and other similarly delicious treats help to fuel my brain." L held up the plate containing the newly brought dessert. "And, secondly..." He trailed off, recoiling the plate as if his arm were a catapult. Within seconds the cupcake went flying, soaring majestically over the keyboards and chairs, before smacking a caught-off-guard Light right in the face. "It's very fun to throw them in people's faces, would you not agree?"
