"Grief affects us in many ways. Not all of them are good or beneficial. How we choose to deal with our grief helps to define who we truly are. Sometimes, that revelation of who we are is worse than that which caused our grief in the first place."
Saying Goodbye
It was morning on the world of Dantooine. A single figure emerged from the back door of a cottage in the rolling hills of the countryside. Fastening his cloak, the figure walked over to a large tree that was nearby. He smiled sadly when he saw that the tree had blossomed and its beautiful flower petals were falling gently to the ground like snow. In the protective shade of the tree was a grave marker. Kneeling down before the grave, the figure stared sadly at the name written upon the head stone. As he gently ran his fingers over the name, another sad smile crossed his face. "The tree has finally blossomed," he said to the person buried in the grave. "You would have loved it, it's so beautiful. I miss you. Things seem so cold here without you. If…if I could have been with you when it happened I would have. You know that I would have let nothing bad ever happen to you."
With teary eyes, the figure stood up and looked down at the head stone. "I have to go away," he continued. "There's something I need to do. I don't think I will ever get to come back here, even when I'm through. I know that you wouldn't like what I'm about to do, and for that I am sorry. I'm so sorry for everything. I love you, and nothing will ever change that."
Slowly the figure turned away from the grave and walked back to the cottage. As he picked up a lit torch just outside the doorway, he began to weep. Then he threw the torch inside the cottage and watched as it caught fire and burned. "Please," he said as he turned back towards the grave. "Forgive me for what I am about to do. Forgive me for what I am about to become."
To be continued...
